I was wondering this exact same thing. I never watched the series. I watched this movie the ther night and I really don't fully understand the purpose of the bees...
I take it that they were able to spread the virus, but why were they all contained around the cornfield? Why didn't they fly out into the towns and cities and strat spreading the virus?

Honestly, I'd have to watch it first as I'm a new fan of the series (getting ready to be VERY disappointed as I'm finishing the 7th season). I only saw parts of the movie when I was I teenager.
But the fact is I don't remember any reason in the series explaining why they used bees to infect earth with smallpox other than alien being immune to bee stings. But there again, it didn't change much in the story. They could have used mosquitos.
Therefore, why would it have to be explained to anyone? I think the movie stands on its own, but I'll have to see it first I guess..

Says Chris Carter the creator. They made the film specifically for the TV audience and for film goers who may not have seen the series at all. You don't need to see the tv show to enjoy this movie, but the movie is even better when you've watched the first 5 seasons of the show

No. I think you're confusing it with the 2008 film that was a stand-alone. However, that film was supposed to follow the series, but due to being under development for so long it was finally produced as a stand-alone.
The first film, 1998, was correctly tied with the show. Watching it without having watched the show makes it seem confusing. All I can say, is watch the show it's worth it.
I think you can still understand the movie without seeing the series, although having not been in that position I can't really say for sure but using things just from the movie: the black oil virus was in the corn and being spread to the bees when they pollinated it so that the bees would be infected. The bees were also being stored for when the invasion began. Basically they were waiting for it to happen (around a major holiday after FEMA declared a state of emergency). It's the same reason why the aliens weren't attacking en masse yet -they weren't ready to begin.

He's serious. and right, to a degree. Corn is the product of an awful lot of breeding, from a plant that started out so different you wouldn't recognize it. But the main point is that corn is pollinated by wind, not bees. Nobody with any sense would grow it for bee food. Clover, buckwheat, many flowering plants, but not corn. Such an elementary fact only needs Wikipedia as a source.

The Bees are used to spread the alien virus that would kill off all of mankind to make way for the aliens to colonize the Earth. Those that have colaborated with the aliens to develop a hybrid of alien and man during the experiments would be immune to the virus. This was the whole premise of the show.
shareThe movie pretty much explains everything, abeit in a quite confusing way. But if you pay attention to every dialogue there is answers to all your questions, I think the movie does the opposite really, you don't need to see the series as the film literally tells you the whole plot.

Actually bees can use/eat corn pollen.
Bees aren't needed for pollination but the idea in the movie was that they were maintaining the bees ready for the invasion day, so they had the corn around just so the bees could feed from it.
