My wife Eva is a fan of her art/ why I got her the DVD. After 10 minutes she left the film & I agree after watching the whole bunch. ~Some great moments, but come on you guys, Frida was not a speaking English person and in general, indeed this ruined the film for me also. In Holland all is always subtitled, and watching Frida talking English to Diego, it's so fake on this flick... What do you think?
shareI watched the DVD last night and Frida speaking English disturbed me too. There was no option for Spanish dubbing so I selected the option for Italian dubbing with English subtitles and pretended that it was spoken in Spanish.

Yeah, I completely agree with you. If this movie were in spanish, I would enjoy much. It's all weird for Frida to speak English. I'd prefer it in spanish, even though I can't speak any spanish.

Well, she did know how to speak English, but yeah, it would have been better in Spanish.

1.- Most of the actors on the film does not speak spanish
2.- There are another film about frida in spanish made in mexico and nobody (at least out of mexico) wathed and it's better than the hollywood version (and best interpreted by Ofelia Medina one of the best actress in México)
3.- They (Salma Hayek) want to make the movie internetional so that's why "they" put "famouse" hollywood actors.
4.- The strong personality of Frida is bigger than his beauty (She was sooo ugly) and Salma Hayek doesn't have the half of Frida's personality so if "they" put an ugly "nobody" girl in the film surely nobody (at least in US) wached the film.
5.- Most of the americans does'nt like to watch a subtitled movie so...
I'm a mexican and i'm proud of frida and i'm not proud of the movie but now more people know about her life because of the movie so...
HEY! she was NOT ugly!!! actually, salma looks very much like her (well, yeah sure she's prettier, she's a famous actress) i'm amazed at the resemblance

The worst thing isn't that they spoke English, it was that they spoke really crappy English. Is it more realistic to have non-english-speaking people speak crappy English rather than having them speaking proper English?
shareIf the film had been Mexican language, even if it had been dubbed, it would have flopped. I'm not making a political point, and I'm certainly not anti-Mexican, it's just an economic reality in these crappy commercial times we live in.
SellMy Kayak makes the point herself on the DVD extras. This was a labor of love for her (sorry about the cliche) and she wanted it to reach a wide audience. She also says that funding was crucial for this film and so ... English it was. It isn't fair or unfair it just is.
I watch a lot of dubbed Japanese movies, many of which are far superior to the dross put out by Hollywood. I would've been happy to read a dub track for this but I think we're in a small minority - those who like movies and can read!
I totally agree with you. If it's decided that the movie should be in English to reach a wider audience, fair enough, but there's no point in having everyone speak with exaggerated Spanish accents. They're in their own country, speaking to their families, they shouldn't sound like foreigners.

I don't have a problem with it. I speak multiple languages and I don't mind subtitled movies at all. It's just a decision- just as "The Passion of the Christ" was pretty much the only movie shot in the original language of Aramaic, and movies about ancient Greece and Rome are shot in the vernacular of the director or the targeted audience. I would guess that Frida has the most in common with the Juliette Binoche/ Johnny Depp movie "Chocolat", if you think about it. Then there's "Persepolis", in which the Iranian characters speak French instead of Persian.
I think that the people who made the decision wanted it to be an international movie, and decided that English was the right language in which to present it.

AT LEAST: They didn't put English actors in the roles, (my personal pet peeve with every movie that should be in a language other than English).
