Nicole Kidman was great in "The Hours" but Salma Hayek should have won

Nicole Kidman was awesome as Virginia Woolf in "The Hours" but Salma Hayek deserved the Academy Award for Best Actress. Think about it: How many more chances will Kidman have? Hmmm, let's see, "Cold Mountain" and "The Human Stain." How many more chances will Hayek have? None. This was Hayek's turn and the voters overlooked it.

nicole's performance was far FAR better than salma's was, but both were incredible candidates.
the female oscar race that year was by far one of the tightest races of the last few decades, but i definately agree with the winner that was chosen. not only was nicole's performance the finest of the year, but it's also one of my all time favourite female performances.

The Hours is really a boring movie but Frida is captivating.
For me Salma deserved the Oscar and I think she's anoyying but in that movie she is incredible.

Physically. The Nose that Kidman had? The Unobrow that Hayek had? Forget physical appearance only; both did a truly amazing job.

But then again, these days, the AMPAS are manipulative. They don't want to be held upon a grudge with the public.

But If you've seen 'The Hours,' you'd know a fact that Kidman deserved that win a hell lot. It was a depressing character. She portrayed it perfectly.

My real names Alexandra jerlane; I like jer.

Sorry, but Nicole gave an incredibly powerful, moving and especially difficult performance. Frida was supposed to be strong, opinionated and passionated, whilst Virginia Woolf was a depressed woman and Nicole played it off brilliantly. Her eyes, her gestures and posture all indicate that she was truly lost in her character. A fair win If you ask me. I recall Renee Zellwegger and Diane Lane being nominated too, well, out of the two, Salma only beats Diane Lane.

That entire scene where Frida's in the bed then going to the hospital with the baby is one of the most saddest scenes I've ever seen in a movie. Salma should've won, Nicole can many more chances at being nominated, just look at Meryl Streep.

Salma Hayek was divine in 'Frida'. It was a very passionate and humane performance. But Nicole Kidman was also terrific in 'The Hours'. Don't forget that Kidman only had 30 minutes of screen time in 'The Hours' and the impact she left on many people was huge. It was a very complex and intelligent performance. Very subtle, esoteric and quiet. They both used different acting methods, had totally different artistic approaches to the material and vastly different characters to portray. They were both great.
Julianne Moore was also stunning in 'Far From Heaven'. Subtlety at its best. A very restrained and deeply complex performance.
Renee Zellweger was really fun in 'Chicago', too. Despite not having a great voice, she pulled it off, she had fantastic screen presence, she was funny, cunning and alluring and was really entertaining.
Diane Lane was the least impressive of the bunch, in my opinion, but that wasn't her fault. In the first half of the film she was spectacular, but the second half of the film was bad and her character didn't have any interesting development, unfortunately. But it was still a very good performance.
I think that the 2003 Academy Awards were really interesting. The competition was very tough. Personally, I thought that Moore was the best of the nominees, but I am perfectly fine with Kidman's Oscar.
Kidman has proved she's a very versatile and talented actress. To Die For (1995), Eyes Wide Shut (1999), The Others (2001), Moulin Rouge (2001), The Hours (2002), Dogville (2003), Birth (2004), Margot at the Wedding (2007) and Rabbit Hole (2010) are all great performances.

By the way, they didn't give the Oscar to Kidman because she lost for 'Moulin Rouge'. The frontrunner that year was Sissy Spacek for her work in 'In the Bedroom'. Halle Berry stole the spotlight in the very last month before the Oscar ceremony and eventually won the Oscar. Third in line was probably Judi Dench for her work in 'Iris' (who won the BAFTA award for Best Lead Actress). Nicole Kidman was forth and Zellweger was fifth. So yeah. It's not like they gave the Oscar to Kidman because she lost to Berry the previous year.

No way, Hayek was mediocre at best.
