I've wondered this for the longest time. Like...why on Earth did Kaufman choose Malkovich for the movie? What was the motivation there? Did he just have a hat with a bunch of names in it?

I guess because Kaufman is a huge fan of John Malkovich. it's almost clear whit the wall pictures. besides, Malkovich is a great theatre actor. He [Malkovich] must had played a pantomime and puppeteers roles.
