Armageddon vs. Deep Impact....

This was the bout on the last episode of CineSmack. It was hilarious. Great stuff, although some people on this board are not going to be happy with the results.

Considering that Deep Impact came out first, I'd say that is wrong. Deep Impact came out first but they did come out in the same year so they were probably made at about the same time. It has happened in other years too, two movies with a similar plot/idea coming out within months of each other.

Isn't Deep Impact just a cheap blatant rip off? I haven't actually seen it but it seems that way to me.

They came out at more or less the same time.

reply

Armageddon is a **** action movie, Deep impact is a **** drama movie.

reply

I watched this movie and was astonished...not in a good way either. Like in a Plan 9 from Outer Space astonished.

Deep Impact was formulaic and sappy but it was a far better movie.

reply

Deep Impact was more thoughtful & character driven while Armmageddon was more action packed.

Deep Impact was probably more realistic in terms of how panic would set in and the public would react while Armageddon was over the top and unrealistic about how they'd operate in space and get the drilling done.

reply

Weirdly enough, this is the only Michael Bay movie I like. I enjoyed both of them, but this one always felt more entertaining for me.

reply

Depends on what kind of mood you're in, both are about asteroids but told in different ways. Deep Impact tries to be realistic and thought provoking, whereas Armageddon is more action oriented, at times it feels more like a western in space instead of a straight science fiction film.

My ignore list is quite large.

reply

It really is a matter of personal taste. I found "Armageddon" to be FAR more entertaining than "Deep Impact" Even though the latter was more realistic, it had very boring characters.

Maybe, just once, someone will call me 'Sir' without adding, 'You're making a scene.'

Well, if a podcaster said it, it must be true right?

Deep Impact was hokey, boring, and tedious when it was trying to be original, endearing, and artistic.

Everything from the guy at the beginning racing down the mountain in his Jeep to the reading of Moby Dick is nothing more than cinematic cliche.

Armageddon on the other hand is self-aware and instead of trying to be something it's not, it's just a fun ride with actual likeable characters.

If you pirate media, you don't get to have an opinion on it.

reply

Yeah, I agree with your comments, Advocator, on both films.

My other issue with Deep Impact is that the true lurrrrv subplot, which I think was meant to be touching and inspiring, really just came off as stalker-freaky and pretty unpleasant. Leelee Sobieski gave off such a "please just leave me alone" vibe through most of the movie that it made Frodo (sorry, Elijah Wood) seem like a somewhat disturbed predator, and almost made me want to see him die just so the poor girl could stop being so freaked out.

Beyond that, I thought it was an uneven film. People love to rubbish Armageddon for its various sillinesses, but I feel it was a more technically adept and far more engaging film to watch.

You might very well think that. I couldn't possibly comment.

reply

Correct take.

I haven’t seen either since release but I remember being surprisingly bored by Deep Impact and entertained by Armageddon (although it was a big step down for Michael Bay after The Rock - a film he has not matched and will never surpass, it seems)

Armageddon knew it was trash and had fun, while still offering thrills, drama and a killer soundtrack. DI took itself way more seriously but lacked substance or anyone to root for.

reply

Deep Impact had a better story...Armageddon flashier, bigger names, more action.

The CORE was better than both!!!

A combination of Deep Impact and Armageddon would have been great. The wild excess of Bay combined with the more restrained aspects of Deep Impact.

Michael Bay's problem is that he shoots and edits his entire movie like a music video or trailer, not allowing for the slow down of the pace of the movie to sell the larger moments.

Deep Impact went to far the other direction and felt like a tv mini series rather then a big budget movie.
