sorry but.....I LOVE THIS MOVIE!

contrary to practically everything i read stating the opposite, I think this movie is great! good writing, AMAZING ACTING....scary enough to achieve fright without even showing the monster (which scared me the most)....

so many good twists in the film...

my favorite theme was the titles...each title short (THE (one word))....and scarier with each title...when the titles "The Sphere" and "The Monster" came on...holy *beep* i crapped my pants! just from the title! now THATS effectiv psychological horror!

I absolutely agree. That's the old Hitchcock way of frightening people: There is a certain danger, a certain fear but you do not know what you actually are frightened of. This movie had so many great scary moments: The statement, that the whole crew is going to die, the computer beginning to communicate with the crew, the cupboards full of this one book. An in the end it showed that the story was wunderful logical. Great acting, too! Afterall a very entertaining, scary and at the same time intelligent movie. Can't understand why people don't like it.

Having read the novel, I had to turn this peice of crap off at a certain point. I also skipped to the end, i was curious how they did that, and they made the stupid sphere fly away or something? What was that?

reply

I liked the movie too. But what was the ending in the book? The Sphere goes back to the past and bring back dinosaurs?

reply

Dunno, I havent readed the book. By watching the movie, I understood that the sphere was some kind of gift from some higher being or other species, and a gift that could be used by the species that find it for good or for evil.

But the characters realized that mankind was not ready to receive so much power, and so they decided to forget everything so other wouldnt try to use their power, or try to get the sphere so they could get the power.

And once that hapened, the sphere (that could be a living inteligent entity) decided to leave the planet and either return some other time or never return again.

reply

I saw some good in it, but how you you really like it? The ending was horrible. I get how the sphere was a living being or gift or whatever that decided to leave, but I hated to lame dialogue and how it happened... "We're not ready" and "agree to forget"?

Agree to forget? Really? How the hell??

reply

"Agree to forget? Really? How the hell??"

Because they have the power to make their thoughts reality dumbass. Were you not paying attention the whole *beep* movie?

reply

I read the book first and absolutely love the movie. The score is beautiful, the acting is great, the direction is artistic. Not sure why some people hate it so much, but I guess they are huge devotees of Michael Crichton or something.

reply

This is definitely one of my guilty pleasure films.

I enjoy it very much every time I watch it, despite the fact that it has many obvious flaws. It does a lot more right than it does wrong, though.

reply

agree. this is a great sci-fi film with a lot going for it. ive always liked the movie.

reply

Man I am so glad I'm not the only one. I've always loved this movie and was put off by the low rating and some of the negative threads. I never could pinpoint why I love it. Maybe the fantastic ending?

I dunno. Just weird enough to have a special little place in my heart.

reply

Why does this movie get such a bad rap? it was very well made and I love how Levinson laid out the story in the film. I personally think people couldn't understand it and so they hate it.

reply

I also don't understand why this movie gets such a bad rap. People usually listen to my opinions about movies, but many have seemed too prejudiced against this movie to even bother with it despite my recommendation.

I am not crazy about the ending, but I can't imagine that the ending has turned people off this much. The rest of the movie is so fascinating and suspenseful that I think just about everyone should check it out!

reply

this is one of those movies i just chose to watch, not having heard anything about it and I loved it,then I told everyone that and they looked at me in disgust, why??? this is an awesum movie, its not perfect but at least it tries something different and all the acting is fantastic.

reply

Cool movie 9/10 from me

reply

I was all for the film until after the "Battle Stations" part where a good chunk of the cast gets knocked off and then I don't know, it just...deflates but I found it underrated as well

I had a weird experience with this movie.

I rented it as a new release and just could not get through it. It just didn't grab me at all.

I dismissed it as just being a turd.

But, several years later, I caught it on NBC as a sunday night movie and I couldn't stop watching it. I loved it.

My theory is that; as a big budget hollywood movie, it fell flat. But in the context of a good tv thriller it worked.

I don't know.. I just couldn't get through it first time around.

Anyone else had this experience with a film?

I think it's an underrated movie. I saw it in the theatre when it was release and I can say it was very great. Good sci-fi story with intelligent dialogs. Superb directing (there are wonderfull images in this film) and the actors performances are really believable and intriguing. I think this movie had a bad release. it was release in the same time that "Titanic" so I dont know many people who saw "Sphere". It should be rediscovered. This movie goes along with "Event Horizon" and "The Abyss".

I have read the novel by Michael Crichton and it was great. This movie was also great. The only thing that bothered me was changing the ship from alien to american. and the time travel bit. they weren't in the book.

Overall, a great movie because it followed the source material 85%.

reply

Hey I love this movie as well! It was one of my favourite movies as a kid, I haven't seen it in ages but I love it. It was scary and the underwater setting was cool.

reply

The ship was American in the book. The book had a robot initially trying to open the spacecraft and they found English writing. So was the time travel bit. They talked about going through a black hole as well.

For the record, this is one of my three favorite books of all time. The movie is great, and while it leaves a number of small - but important - things out from the book, most parts of the movie are in the book. I can see why plenty of people might not particularly care for it if they haven't read the book, but honestly if you liked the book and you hate the movie, you're being anal about the small missing things. I'd say this is a great film adaptation of the book, and the casting was flawless. I mean, seriously, name one main character that wasn't played by the perfect actor for that role?

This also has to be one of the best DVDs out there in regards to the commentary, Dustin Hoffman & Samuel L. Jackson chatting throughout it is great.

reply

Really good film. Really good book. Up there with Event Horizon, abyss, solaris... enjoy the acting and take it for what it is a really good sci-fi film.

reply

Uh, the ship wasn't alien in the book. They even found out earlier on in the book that it wasn't alien...

I've had the same experience many time. The first one I remember was the movie Nightflyers. I astually walked out of the theater 20 minutes into this movie. Years later I got the urge to rent it and the second time around I really liked it.

reply

I thoroughly enjoyed this movie also, but I have a rare case of taste where even if the ending is bad (as it very much was), I can still like a movie overall. The last 10 minutes were terrible, but the acting was great throughout, and it was pretty scary.

reply

I love this movie as well. It freaked me out a lot when I first saw it. Perfect tension and awsome music. Acting ain't bad either ;)
Best adaptation of a Crichton novel, IMO. Better than Jurasic Park

reply

Yes I agree with Nomad. I went to the theater with an old girl friend of mine, back in the day. I could not figure the movie out at all. I walked out that theater thinking that the movie was the biggest load of BS ever.

A few years later (can't quite remember how-might have rented it or something) I watched it again.

I was blown away.It might have been the fact that I had no unbased pre conseption of what the movie MIGHT be,or maybe the fact that I had seen it before gave me a little fore site in to the movie.

Well it's now easly in my top 10 of all time. Flaws and all

reply

I absolutely agree with the OP. THIS IS HORROR. Not that cammy slasher $h!t you see these days. I can honestly say Sphere is creepier than anything I've seen over the last 10 years.
