I would like to see it remade if they actually showed the giant squid. That was the coolest monster but they never actually showed it.

I think the point of NOT showing the squid was to signify that what you imagine is scarier than what you actually see.

What about a remake/sequel which, by good directing, screenplay and story, tries to fix the issues with the original movie and expands the story? Original characters could be involved, or not. But I think the idea and the story still have potential for a very good psychological thriller. Just look how great Cube (and not the sequels) was. This one has elements of sci-fi, thriller, mystery, psychology, and drama. All it takes is a good team to cook a nice movie out of these elements.
