I still don't understand why they choose J,Lo for the film.
And to all you idiots she looks nothing like Selena.
shareAnd to all you idiots she looks nothing like Selena.
shareIt's not always about looking exactly the same. The person needs overall skills, too. I remember it was an open casting call for this role, with thousands auditioning. Entertainment Tonight showed the long lines of auditioners and was interviewing some of them.
Apparently J-Lo and Salma Hayek were the top two with looks, dancing ability, acting ability. Hayek didn't want the role after-all and J-Lo was better overall than everyone else.
I think J-Lo did an outstanding job of capturing Selena's charm and positive spirit. If I could go back in time I'd wring Yolanda's neck. Then we wouldn't even need to be talking about this.
I agree with hka J-Lo may not really look like Selena but she had the best skills for the job overall, and she gave a really good performance. And yea I much rather Selena still be alive and there would be no movie at all...stupid pig face Yolanda.

She was great and played it very well.
shareSalma Hayek was offered the role but realized she didn't have the singing/dancing skills to do the role so she turned it down.
sharei dont think she looked like selena at all, but she still did a good job playing selena.
shareShe got the role because she already knew the director.
I think she did a piss poor job as Selena - then again, I think the movie was stupid. Too many inaccuracies in the film. I think another film should be made with her family messing it up like they did this one.
I don't procrastinate...I reschedule.
I thought in so many scenes she looked almost identical. To say they look "nothing alike" is silly. Now Selena and say, Jonah Hill....they look nothing alike!
shareI wouldnt say a lot of scenes, but J Lo looks just like her when she has the cowboy outfit on and heavy make up.
She got picked, because she was best for the role.
Don't know what's with the name-calling, but oh well.
We have different opinions, just keep that in mind....
AB even commented that he nearly couldn't tell the difference between Selena and JLO, So i'm assuming (since her OWN BROTHER made this comment) that she did a fairly well job.
JLO did awesome job as Selena x they both look alike, big sexy butt and hot looking xxxxx

J.Lo also captured Selena's hearty, infectious laugh and playful personality down-pat. If you watch interviews of the real Selena she is often silly and laughing all the time. I think Jennifer did a good job with that.

Jennifer Lopez is Puerto Rican and they used a LOT of make-up to give her Selena's Mexican-American look. It's easy to see in these pics:

Jennifer is also a very good dancer and a good actress (much better than she is a singer). But she was not well-known before this movie. Perhaps she had an inside connection; I don't know.
Since they didn't need a singer, J Lo was a pretty good choice (obviously, given the success and longevity of the movie). I actually think the real Selena was even more silly and fun-loving than J Lo played her but it was close enough. Plus J Lo knew she was going to die young while Selena didn't, so it makes sense she sub-consciously added just a touch more seriousness to her role.
She left her acting career because she wanted to be a singer/entertainer.... She started out as a dancer.....
but I agree I like most of the movies she does.
She looks enough like Selena that she doesn't look completely ridiculous in the role. But, consider the idea that Selma Hayak was asked to play her as well. Not only is her accent entirely too thick for the role, but she is absolutely the furthest thing from Selena in regards to looking like her.
Also, I'd like to mention that they both came from a different mix of races. Which accounts for their looking so different from one another. Jennifer Lopez was born to Puerto Rican parents. While Selena was born to a Mexican-American father and a mother who was half Cherokee Indian.
In any case, I think she captured Selena beautifully. She was sweet, charming, and fun-loving. I think the movie was a great testament to her life and her legacy.

Yes, Selena and JLo clearly don't look like twins, but JLo did an outstanding job as Selena, she even had the mannerisms down.
"This isn't a thimble, it's Turkish nipple armor."
At the time J.Lo was a nobody, she won the role fare and square. The makeup crew did a pretty amazing job making her resemble Selena as much as they could.
I'm not a J.Lo fan at all, but this film is the only film I loved her in. She played the hell out of that role (I mean that in a good way). She captured the essence of Selena down to the core. The smile, the laugh, the talk, the gestures as she performed live. A truly outstanding and breathtaking performance. At times I would completely forget it was J.Lo acting (a great actor makes you forget they're acting, and make you believe they're the person they're portraying).
Does J.Lo still have the great acting skills that made this movie a success as well as her career? Hell no! J.Lo sucks at everything she does now a days. Her fame made her such a phony.
I understand your concern though, granted the fact that J.Lo is overrated and just awful now, but back than she was a true talent back when she was really Jenny from the block and not Jenny from L.A.
