Curious: When did it first dawn on YOU...

When did you first realize that the queen of Romantic Comedies was actually not going to get the guy in the end? I am embarrassed to admit that, for me, it was not until Kimmy and Michael were driving away in the Limo! I kept looking for Kim's "true" love interest to show up early in the film. And even later, was just puzzling how in the world they were going tie up the loose ends with adorable Kimmy! I thought that they would turn her into an evil bitch at the last minute! Anyone else out there?

Well, I am embarrassed to admit that too... but it worked the same way for me, even if I liked Kimmy a lot ! Julianne was totally wrong but it didnt stop me hoping for "her" happy ending neither.
Hope that it helps you to feel a bit better knowing there's someone feeling the same "wrong" way ;-)

Same for me. I first watched this movie in the movie theatre when i was about 16 or 17. I remember crying a little tear because julia didnt get the guy!! I did not like kimmy though. I thought she was annoying and to cutsey. I also didnt buy that any man would chose cameron diaz over julia roberts. Maybe thats just cause i dont think cameron is attractive. But it seemed that dermont and julia had a chemisty and a history that he didnt seem to have with cameron. just my opinion though, im sure there are alot of people that really liked kimmy.

Sorry to rant instead of answering your question..I figured it out fairly early on but cant pin point an exact scene.

Yep! That's exactly when I realized too. When he didn't kiss her back I let out a big "uh-oh". I think everything worked out though. :)

When George reminded Jules that no one was chasing her (while she was chasing Michael and Michael was chasing Kim).

Get me a bromide! And put some gin in it!

Exactly! Why would you chase after the guy when he's chasing after the other girl?!

All along. When he looked at her with lovey dovey eyes after her atrocious karaoke song, then I knew that it was going to a heart breaker story for Julia's character. And she had the uber suave gay BFF to be there for her in the end. Personally I could not see what the two ladies were fighting over... Dermot's character was dull.

Word. Michael may have been fooling Jules, but he wasn't fooling me. I knew that as much as he loved Jules, their chance was loooong gone. And Kimmy was now the apple in his eye, so to speak.

I didn't think Michael was dull. I think he was very charming and extremely sexy and he has a lot of qualities that I, like many other women, find attractive.

Love is blinding, remember that. As intelligent and witty as Jules obviously was, love can turn even the wisest of people into utter fools.

Perfect answer.
And people outside of the love triangle can see things clearly and can help which is why Jules had George to keep her honest about the situation.

I also initially hoped that she would get the guy, and likewise was surprised that she didn't. It was best to end it the way they did, because the only way for her character to arc and grow was for her not to get back with her former lover.

It became clear to me when the Brit said, "...and who's chasing you?" My heart sank - I realized the only way to end it was for Cameron Diaz to follow through with the wedding, and Julia Roberts to find true friendship with the Brit.

Similar situation happened to me, except that I didn't crash the wedding.

BTW I always thought that Meg Ryan was the queen of romantic comedies, even in 1997, when this movie came out...

I think it makes sense she didn't end up w/ Mike in the end. She took a chance & proffessed to someone she loved them when it was the hardest thing for her to ever do & she should be proud of herself for doing that--for HERSELF. Even if she didn't GET the guy but at least still has him as a friend. I really liked that messege :)

- absolutely. She keeps the gay friend and grows to be happy for and a friend to her former boyfriend as well.

Like all of you, I was conditioned to think that in a Julia Roberts movie, Julia is going to get the guy. It was original and brave for the film to do otherwise. For me the moment came when she did not confess to Michael right away that she was the author of the e-mail to Michael's boss, before he could say anything to Kimberly. Up to then she was just funny and desperate but that went over the line and was a really despicable thing to do. After that, I knew she would have to lose in the end.

Looking back, this movie did a masterful job of playing on our expectations of a Romantic Comedy and a Julia Roberts movie. It was honest with the audience all along with the character revealing episode of the email, the "whose chasing you?" line, the adorableness and sweetness of Kimmie (I thought), him not kissing her back, and the classic confrontation in the bathroom. The only time it maybe was not fair with the audience was making Mike so obviously jealous of George during the restaurant scene.

When Kim started crying about the job set up a the beginning. You can tell there they really loved each other.

reply

Very early on. The way they set up the characters, Kim doesn't have any flaws unless you count being too sweet and gentle as a flaw. Julianne on the other hand is a neurotic mess and Michael is a nice average type of guy.

It would have been a cruel twist for Michael to dump Kimmy.

Sometimes a movie or tv show plot is so stupid that only the stupid can understand it.
