so why did Tommy Lee Jones leave his wife?

But why did he leave her in the first place? Will Smith made the choice for the career. Why did Jones' character do it? He obviously misses her we can see from that scene where he uses the satellite to view her.

Yeah I dunno, it's weird. I used to think it was because he was just accidentally witness to the alien landings and so had to join the agency otherwise he'd blab. But then he'd just be like all those other humans that end up on the "Hotsheets" whom no one would believe.
Guess it just adds a bit of mystery to a cool badass character.

My take has always been that, as he was that "dumb kid who got lost on a dirt road," he stumbled into an incredible situation. MIB was still a relatively new organization. Because K handled the situation not with fear but with awe and respect, he was recruited by choice. Sometimes people have to sacrifice things they love to do something great. This was his great thing.

not to forget, she wasn't his wife at the time, she was his date, i think it was prom.

They married after he 'came out of his coma' and they were unable to sustain the marriage in the time frame between MIB one and two.

He probably thought that as much as he loved her, MiB was a more important calling for the time being. He might have also mistakenly thought he could get back to her at some point.

I'm sure it wasn't any different than all the soldiers who've enlisted and had to be away from family for a time, with the exception of not being able to give details on his job. But now that I think about it , where 'was his coma body' supposed to be for all that time that the woman was never able to visit?
