Unfairly hated?

Is this a great follow-up? No. But the film has a few memorable scenes and has the same feel as the original. If I need a Jurassic Park fix and don't feel like watching the original, this will do the job. I honestly prefer it to any of the further sequels that were made. I'm not sure why "Jurassic World" is loved by so many. It's a CGI fest that doesn't even feel like it's the same universe as the original films.

It sucks and is probably the film in the franchise that I am least interested in revisiting.

The thing about the JP franchise is that the producers have had a hell of a time with consistency.

JP: Fucking classic. Excellent movie.
TLW: Big disappointment. Not even a good movie.
JP III: Lightweight popcorn fare that's okay for a Saturday matinee but nothing compared to JP.

JW: Not excellent, but pretty good and a solid reboot, even if it's not a classic on the level of the original film.
FK: Big drop from JW. Just not a very good movie. Arguably the worst of the franchise.
DOM: ?

One thing that I think is indisputable is that JP was easily the SMARTEST of the films with the BEST STORY. The rest have had relatively weak stories and relied much more on the action.

reply

I think part 1 is far and away the best one. 9/10. The others are no higher than a 6.5.

Lost World is fantastic. It has some structural problems and we didn’t need to see Malcolm’s inexplicably black daughter acrobat-kick a raptor 🤦🏻‍♂️

Apart from that it’s great. The T-Rex attacks are terrifying, and it features the series’ most vicious kill with Eddie getting ripped in two. The raptor scenes are also nail-biting.

It puts to shame all of the action/effects scenes of the non-Spielberg entries, because it uses puppets which feels credible, and are used as a guide for the CGI which looks way better than modern CGI. It’s also shot on film which always feels more real than the 90% CGI movies of today which are almost Pixar.

Spielberg also always has real objects getting hit and knocked by the CGI creatures so your brain registers it as real. Look at how the raptors smash into real glass, vehicles, or rhe T-Rex wears a tent for a moment. None of the later films have this kind of sophistication.

It doesn’t have the lean storytelling, intelligence or theme-park irony of the first film, but it goes for a darker and more dangerous tone with more action, which is a pretty smart move for a sequel to such a mind-blowing original. You’ve got the concept, now let’s run with the thrills (Spielberg did the same with Temple Of Doom).

I also like how it kept the T-Rex as the King, without the nonsense of trying to up it with ever more absurd power-dinosaurs like the Spinosaurus, Indominous Rex and Super-Raptor bollocks we saw later on. Lost World still felt real.

reply

The thing that I like most about this one compared to the other sequels is that it feels like the actual world of Jurassic Park. As much as this isn't a great film, it's enjoyable to an extent and does what every action movie should do: have memorable action scenes.

reply

That’s true. Spielberg is the king of set-pieces and this has some of his finest ever.

reply

It's honestly a boring movie. It has its good moments, particularly with the raptors and the scene with with the buses at the cliff, but otherwise it's a droll of a film. However, it's actually the second worst in the series.

Jurassic Park 3 isn't that good but at least it wasn't trying to be anything more than what it was; the spinosaurus was a nice change of pace from the T-Rex and it has a cool design; the pteranodons were cool; the raptors steal the scene again, this time with a cool black design; and it's the shortest movie in the series, good news for anyone that can't tolerate mediocrity for long.
Jurassic World was overall better than JP 3 and it was nice finally seeing a fully functioning park that was popular around the world; Chris Pratt was surprisingly cool as a serious character; Bryce Dallas Howard is sexy, although I didn't care for her haircut; bloodhound raptors were cool; and the 3-way fight at the end was pretty epic, even though I didn't care for the Indominus.
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom has the honor of worst movie since it felt super contrived and had nothing really going for it, like JP 3 only much worse. The first half where they were getting the dinosaurs off the island was alright, but after that with the mansion, the cloned girl twist, and the lame super-raptor was just bad. But we got more Bryce Dallas Howard, who got thiccer since the last movie.

I think Jurassic World: Dominion will be a solid movie. Seeing the dinosaurs living among the rest of the world is an intriguing concept and I can't wait to see it, Lost World had the right idea with that. We get to finally see the giganotasaurus, though design-wise it's not that different from a T-Rex and therefore not as unique as the spinosaurus. More Bryce is a good thing; Chris Pratt will continue to entertain; and it's nice to see the original trio again, it looks like they'll actually share screen time together again as well as with the main cast, something the Star Wars sequels failed to do.

reply

There are a few things I don't like about part 3. I don't like how they tricked Alan Grant to go to the island. I don't like how it didn't feel like it was in the same world as the other films. The talking dinosaur thing was weird. There weren't any memorable action scenes.

reply

III is woefully bad. Grant’s talking raptor dream? A magic flute that ‘tells’ raptors to leave you alone? They’d eat it as quickly as they’d eat your head! The kid is beyond annoying. Lame ‘better than a T-Rex!’ Spinosaurus. None of the action and effects have the Spielberg magic that makes dinosaurs appear credible.

Only the return of Grant, a couple of raptor moments and the appearance of a pterodactyl from the mist are welcome, but those graces aren’t nearly enough save this turd. The Lost World is infinitely better than this TV-movie.

reply

Yeah the third one is just more goofy than anything else with those moments and characters. Closer to Jumanji than Jurassic Park.

reply

Same director.

reply

I actually didn't realise that but how much it makes perfect sense.

reply

Good shout. Yes, III is very ‘Jumanji’. It lacks the menace and suspense of I and II.

reply

I forgot about the kid that was hiding. He somehow was able to get dinosaur urine to fend them off.

reply

I would've mentioned the kids from JP 3 and 4 but I was running out of character limit. I didn't care for them, but at least the kid in 3 wasn't as annoying. He was, however, a weak reason for having another film. Like seriously, they couldn't have thought up another reason to revisit the island? The other films at least kept the focus on the dinosaurs and the impact they could have on the world, even JP 5's mini extinction event had great potential. In fact, the entire second half of JP 5 should've just been JP 6, that would've made it much better.

But like I said, once JP 3's antics got started, I enjoyed it. It wasn't good, but it wasn't boring. And I think it had memorable action scenes: T-Rex vs Spino, the first scene with the raptors, and the pteranodons. As for the talking raptor, turns out it had meme potential, and as we've seen with the Star Wars prequels and Spider-Man 3, memes can save a movie. I didn't mind the raptor flute either, just like I didn't mind JP 4's trained bloodhound raptors. That's just the writers fanboying over raptors, and who can blame them? Movie raptors are cool.

reply

One thing I remember from JP3 was how short it was. I think that's why it's not boring.

reply

I don’t find Lex and Tim annoying at all, but that brat in III is godawful. It’s the actor, he has a punchable face and can’t act. He was equally annoying in The Patriot.

reply

I didn’t mind the kids from the first movie, they served a purpose with Alan’s character and had wholesome moments.

I didn’t care one way or another for the boy in JP 3, but I found the kids in JP 4 annoying, especially the horny older brother.

reply

I’d even pick Malcolm’s weird blackrobat daughter in II over the Disneybrat in III.

reply

lol I completely forgot about her 😂

I don’t know, buddy, that gymnastic kick with the raptor was pretty cringe.

reply

I know. That’s how annoying the III kid is - he irritates me more than that.

reply

I agree with you and you're right about it having the same feel as the original. That's why I never took to the third one. That feels like some sort of daytime Disney movie take on the Jurassic Park franchise with the goofy parents and the kid. The CGI isn't even as good in that one. At least Jurassic Park II maintains the same level of effects.

It's not great by any means, and the first one isn't even perfect either, but it does give you enough good moments to keep you interested i.e. the T-rex and velociraptor scenes.

reply

it's better than the first one

reply

You must be an actor from the sequel.

reply

Shhhhhhhh!

reply

I know a couple of crazies who legitimately hold that opinion. They’re wrong, of course, but The Lost World is certainly underrated.

reply

😂😂😂

reply

no it is fairly hate.
