Horrible movie?

Is there anyone out there, besides me, that thought this movie was terrible and boring? It was so predictable and had a WEAK PLOT (if not NO plot). Philip Baker Hall was so boring and monotone and you knew he would go back and kill Samuel L. They should have picked someone who can actually display emotion. I kept thinking about his Librarian Police role on Seinfeld. This movie shows you nothing new and Philip Seymour Hoffman should have been in more than one scene, although his scene was pointless and didn't even need to be in the movie. I cannot believe this has a 7.7 rating, it is a 4 or 5 at best (I give it a 4)!

So Sydney was MEANT to be dull, emotionless, and have uninteresting, shallow character depth?

reply

He definitely was meant to be emotionless.

Yes, he is meant to be unemotional, and leading a rather dull and boring life. I dont see what's shallow about his character at all. I find him quite interesting, and I think the movie raises a lot of important questions about his personality and motives.

there's no place you can be that isn't where you're meant to be.

I wouldn't say it was horrible, but I didn't find it as good as his following films. Although the plot was good, I think there could have been a little more to the film to help advance the plot more. Not a bad film, but I wouldn't say it was outstanding either. A good begining film for what he would develop in the future.

You know the funny thing about morphin'? You don't appreciate it till you can't do it anymore!

I totally agree with the OP - NO PLOT (or laughably implausible one). Good actors utterly wasted on such garbage. So much a poor imitation of REAL films in this genre e.g. Coen brothers' masterpieces, Tarantino's work (Sydney seemed to be constantly impersonating 'Mr. Wolf'). Gwyneth Paltrow's ludicrous situation with the hostage.. for a lousy 300 bucks? Yeah, real high-rollers this bunch! A blackmailer who settles for 6 grand over such valuable info (where'd he pick that up from?). The list of ineptness goes on and on and on. I don't give a rat's ass about the embarrassingly sycophantic PTA fan club, this film was an INSULT to my intelligence, it is ATROCIOUS! I feel robbed of 2 hours of my life yeah I know it's only? 1 hour 50 or so but I HAD to get this out of my system too TOTAL WATE OF TIME - DO NOT WATCH THIS CRAP!!!! To think this came from the same planet as 'The Man Who Wasn't There'- incredible! I feel worse now having re-lived some of this dross through writing this, I'm done gonna take some Valium and just crash, maybe it was all a horrible, horrible dream......

You are all ignorant when it comes to quality cinema if you rely so much on the presence of a plot.

Ask any serious director and he would prefer to have no plot at all.

This is cinema not storytelling 101.

You and the op should meet each other and sit around comparing your smartphones. That's probably more your speed.

Your pretty stupid if you think this movie is worth a damn. Just a boring waste of time.

reply

I just watched this movie and I really liked it but I guess I must be pretty stupid.

Your generation just isn't programmed to appreciate a film like this. You get more enjoyment out of playing with your smartphone. Sad, very sad.

Sorry you don't this flick. This is just a great example of early writer learning his craft. I think this was a great script and incredibly acted by JCR and PBH.
