The son's death scene is much more viscerally powerful in this one.

Susanne Lohar seemed weaker which works for the role. Naomi Watts is a little too physically fit and strong. Both versions are shot for shot identical. Remember when Americans remade The Vanishing back in '93?. They destroyed the creepy ending to give it a happy one. Luckily, Haneke didn't do anything like that for the English-speaking version. Arno Frisch is Haneke's favorite actor to play psychopaths and hee's great in the Austrian version, but Michael Pitt is a very versatile actor fully capable of getting you to despise him. I say it's really a draw. Both versions have merit.
