Wife was annoying, ungrateful, selfish, etc.

I don't understand how she can complain about domestic issues while he is putting his life on the line infiltrating a dangerous criminal society, severely conflicted by both his job and his conscience.

I get that she doesn't see him anymore but she really had to take a step back and put it all in perspective. Donnie said something to this effect in that counseling scene, he was absolutely right.

What an ungrateful wife.

He may have been putting himself in danger and all of that but don't you think he was enjoying be a gangster? It seemed like he was living a life that a lot of guys aspire to (who knows why) only he didn't have to worry about jail.

Besides, this thing dragged on for years.

It's a trend and it gets scripted in surprisingly often. Don't believe me?

Sopranos. Carmela is a textbook ungrateful cünt and golddigger, preoccupied with spending Tony's money and judging him & pouting 24/7.

Breaking Bad. Skyler gets even worse through the series and is completely unsympathetic to the fact her husband has severe cancer and might die at any moment.
The man is putting his life on the line so that his family might have a safe financial future after he dies, and this wench threatens to turn him to the authorities, disrespects him and even hits him.

The Shield. Corrine gets repeatedly told by Vic why he has to work extra long days to pay off his kids autism tutoring fees etc., and all she does is pout. She does not even get a job until much later in season 3 or so. To add insult to injury, while contemplating divorce she even starts sleeping around with the tutor her husband pays for.

I'm seeing a recurring pattern, really. Why do scriptwriters make all the females into either worthless golddiggers or just plain out scumbags and witches?

lol because most of the time in relationships females on average are the ones who are pathologically selfish. That's not to say men can't be selfish either but IMO men at least tend to KNOW when they are being selfish and self centered. They may not care but at least they know and can potentially change because of that.

IMO Women on the other hand have no clue ( pathologically selfish ) most of the time and can't change. Women on average will never admit or see their flaws and if they do they will also loop the men into them as well to deflect attention and blame away from themselves so their problems can never really be addressed and changed. That's why it's key for a male never to get angry and shout in an argument or else he will lose his cool and focus in drawing attention to her problems. Cunning passive aggression with logic in arguments makes the female go bonkers lol

This isn't true for all relationships but for many this seems to be the case. That's why writers use it all the time...

nailed it.

however, it must be a slow board for this to not garner the attention that only women can give it. ROFL.

Like people in this thread are saying, when you consider all of the stress his family had to endure throughout those years you really can't blame the wife for being like that. So, I don't really think the wife character was being annoying as much as the actress was just playing her annoyingly.

I think this is an example of a fictionalized aspect of a true story, done perhaps for the right reasons, but arguably overcooking the situation to the point of annoyance.

IRL Pistone didn't make visits back to his family as depicted in the movie.

They've inserted them to underscore the pressures that undercover agent must face on long term operations.

There was an interval of 2 years at one stage where he didn't see the family, missing the birthdays, Christmases etc. But the wife did apparently support his work.

IMO this very good movie erred to an extent, in highlighting a marriage breakdown that didn't actually occur.
