Why go to your death?

In the end of the movie Lefty receives a call to what we can assume is a sit down. He then removes his personal items, kisses his girlfriend, and walks out the door.

In real life it was Sonny Black who went to his death. In an earlier scene Lefty says "If you're called you go". But why? Why would someone go somewhere knowing they're going to be killed? I'd think even mobsters value their lives.

old school "honorable mobster" not the new generations

It wasn't really about honor as there is no honor among thieves, however there was a code of ethics and Lefty followed it.

The hit on Joe Pistone was indeed called off after the feds had a chat with the boss. Also, there was an understanding in the Mafia that an undercover cop was just doing his job.

Wrong. "On August 17, 1981, Napolitano was summoned to a meeting in the basement of Bonanno associate Ron Filocomo's home in Flatlands, Brooklyn. Anticipating that he would be killed, Napolitano gave his jewelry to his favorite bartender, who worked below his apartment at the Motion Lounge, along with the keys to his apartment so that his pet pigeons could be cared for.
