Anyone else DEEPLY disturbed by the bashing of the Japaense guy?

I've seen Donnie Brasco probably 10 times and the scene where they bash the Japanese guy in the tiolet of the Japanese restaurant never gets any easier for me. Everytime I mention this to others who have seen this film, I get the impression that nobody else is as affected by the scene as me. Anyone else find that scene DEEPLY disturbing?

Yes very sad. The fact that Donnie was partly responsible for the murder, I could only imagine how he felt.

Ignore these other dicks posting here, they'd probably cry like babies if the mafia dragged them into a toilet.

Ditto the waiter was an arrogant prick.

I felt pretty bad for the waiter...and I also thought the scene was really unrealistic. I mean, why would they draw attention to themselves like that? Seems more likely to me they would just casually and subtly show him their guns and cow him that way.

Great movie, but I agree with the first poster, that was a disturbing scene.

Ifound this scene bloody funny to be honest, this onelittle japanese dude in a tuxedo starting on 5 Mafia Hoods, It's Hilarious!

Well, when the mafia comes to eat in your restaurant you automatically know you shouldn't push them to for example take off their shoes, the guy was indeed asking for a beating, tradition or no tradition. He got the Mafia tradition \o/.

i'm japanese and i couldn't care more about that scene. i probably would've joined the beating if i were there :)

You mean you couldn't care LESS? If you couldn't care MORE then you were obviously offended by it.

I find this particular bashing scene to be the best bashing scene in a move, EVER.

In fact, I've often wondered why there are not more scenes in movies of Koreans being bashed. Maybe that's why me and the wife never go to movies anymore.

Thanks, Hollywood -- for nothing!

Oh, come on first of all it's just a movie and second of all it was just a stupid beating.

The waiter should have noticed that those guys are dangerous.

I remember that two years ago me and some friends got into a fight with 3 guys in a bar because one of them tried to skip in line. It was quite fun...some blood, a broken nose, and i got my jacket ripped off.

I don't "agree" with the incident, I think it was a bit much but due to the content of the movie and in the context of what it was in, it was kind of necessery. One man on one hand is doing his job and sticking to his customs (no harm there)and on the other hand you have Donnie who is trying to do his job without being found out, then you have the other guys who are oblivious to the prideciment that Donnie is in and obviously can't see what's going on.

It's as simple as that really.

Great scene. The waiter was being a prick and got what he deserved, I would do the same in that situation.

Who gives a *beep* about japanese people?

if you find that disturbing, you haven't seen anything. Go watch the scene in Irreversible where some dude gets destroyed when another guy is bashing his face in with a fire extinguisher...you can tell it is computer edited, but it is shocking to see, because he continues to hit him after he is dead, and they show his face getting hit up close....brutal. But cool!

Let me tell you guys something, the only reason this thread got started is because the waiter was Japanese. If the waiter had been Italian-American or any white race, there wouldnt be any uproar. For some reason people seem to rush to defend minority races. The bottom line is it was a visceral scene but not an overly disturbing one, and as for the screaming? what about the scene where Sonny Red gets smoked

That is a ridiculous point. It got brought up because the guy got beat up for DOING HIS JOB! Not to mention, he got mauled by 4 people (all bigger than him too)!

I know lots of people do go overboard defending certian special interest groups. I can understand why you might think that way, but that is NOT what this thread is about.

I'm not criticizing the film at all, as it is underrated! But I did find that scene hard to watch.

The theme of "guilt" was a huge part of Donnie Brasco.

funniest scene ever

a bit off topic, but as much as i love mob movies (i own donnie brasco and read the book and really liked both) they always seem to bring out the emotion that i genuinly hate people who run around in gangs, the mob, whatever. basically just groups that attempt to act on intimidation. obviously they are supposed to to some extent but its really weird that that is always the first thing that comes to me no matter how many times ive seen the movie or others like it. i forget where i heard but...."5 pu****s dont make a dick" always speaks in my head. im sure im weird but i sdunno, anyone else? if you can try to get ahold of the book, it has a few crime scene pics that are a bit gruesome but very interesting along with the other real life insights of agent pistone.

reply

Andrew........Im glad you brought this up. Yes, it was very disturbing! They beat him pretty bad to begin with and when he tried to fight back they beat him even harder! I think it was meant to be upsetting so you could feel the guilt that Donnie had to deal with as part of his job.

I remember the garbage can hitting him on the head! I don't think it's fair to say that the poor guy was asking for it. Many japanese feel strongly about upholding their tradition and I think his reaction was normal.

From reading some of the posts in here, it is obvious that most think this thread is about defending Japanese. This is NOT a race issue, it was just a brutal and injust beating. I realize it is just a movie, but a good movie makes a situation feel very real.

Do you know what this is?

I once shot a japanese man in the face for next to nothing. I poured out some liquor for him later but that was about it.
