how is this rated R

from what I remember there's not much intense violence and the sexuality is toned down as much as it could be considering Jennifer Connolly is on screen.

reply

Well, you do see murder victims and a fair bit of throat slashing.
There is also a bit of nudity.
I agree probably not quite an R nowadays but certainly an M

"They who... give up... liberty to obtain... safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety."

reply

Very little language, some violence. Nudity by Rufus Sewell AND very sensual nudity by Melissa George. :D

Dr. Kila Marr was right. Kill the Crystalline Entity.

actually i just finished watching a documentary "memories of shell beach" in the special features of the Dark City blue ray. the director says he wanted it to be PG or at least PG13 but the cencors gave it an R rating for the sole reason of that it was "too weird"
so the director decided to add nudity and swearing just pretty much because they made him do it.

reply

wow, that sucks. It is definitely a PG-13 kind of movie.

If it had been rated PG13 at release I'm sure it would have gotten more attention that it rightfully deserved.

They deprived the 10-16 year old movies fans! Instead they were forced to watch those horrible Natural Disaster genre of movies that premiered at that time.

reply

Yet another reason why it didn't do well at the box office!

The scenes with nudity and blood are very brief.

reply

It's dark, man!

reply

dark city!

reply

Kind of too dark. Things are not set right again by the end, and probably never will be.

reply

Even if their ultimate situation has not been set right, at least it's a LOT brighter! It's almost like going from black-and-white to color.
