One of the worstly aged movie in the history of cinema?

I've just watched this based on the score, and... firstly I don't want to repeat Dark City's faults, the bad acting, laughable background, plot inconsistencies, and everything else is neatly detailed in other threads.

But still, it has a score of 8.7 from nearly 90.000 people, and with IMDB's reputation for trustworthy scoring this got me thinking. I clearly remember walking out from Titanic in '97 thinking this was my greatest cinematic experience ever. That thought changed pretty rapidly of course since then, not because of the plot, but because the film was so much a product of its age. Shortly after Dark City came Matrix, and the whole genre of part sci-fi part action-movie changed forever. I wonder what score I would have given it in '98.

It's hard to imagine what about this film that has aged. It's kind of a period piece anyway, and there were a lot of practical effects and not a lot of cgi. It's not about the usual zombie or vampire crap either.

What's to age?

Hmm. Have to disagree with everything in the OP's message. I just saw Dark City for the first time today, and I thought it was wonderful and aged really well. Titanic and The Matrix were awful when they came out and are awful to this day. I STILL can't believe The Matrix is in the Top 250 (#19 as of this writing). That's enough to disprove that God loves you and wants you to be happy.

I have to agree with you. I turned it off after two minutes because of the acting and laughable CGI. Absolutely nothing seemed real to me. "The 13th Floor" is an infinitely better movie.

So you are going to judge the movie based on two minutes? That's a deep, thoughtful criticism that I am sure will impact on many people.

So the CGI wasn't state of the art? You do know the film came out in 1998, sixteen years ago? I am so sorry it doesn't look like the latest video games.

I agree with the OP. This movie is overrated.

Why do people say Dark city isn't Hollywood ?? It's 100% Hollywood, and bad Hollywood at that.

At least the Matrix (the first one) was entertaining. A much better movie, by far. It was edgy, well made and without sacrificing intelligence. So it was both smart and fun to watch. Dark City was a little smart and barely fun to watch... (jeez that last fight scene).

Why do people on here claim Dark City is so much smarter then the The Matrix ? So much less Hollywood and superficial ?

What is so profound and deep about Dark City ?

reply

How was the matrix in ANY way edgy, don't get me wrong, it was entertaining, but good god, its a kids movie lol, had the character and emotional depth of a retarded possum in the middle of the road. The matrix I think is the ultimate example of style over substance, and that worked wounderfully for it, but its in every way a total spaz movie, designed for people who's attention span rivaled that of a ferret on crystal meth. BOUND was a much better movie than the matrix by far, wish the siblings had stuck on that path instead of doing comic book movies.

Worstly? I mean, really? that type of writing bespeaks sloppy thinking, IQs aside.

Dark City is a wonderful movie; like 12 Monkeys it's top rank SciFi, eminently watchable, a gorgeous mélange of German Expressionism and Film Noir
that, in addition to its entertainment value, makes one think about issues of memory, concentration, groupthink, free will... also, its little touches, like the fluorescent lighting that constantly flickers off and on... the seediness of the place... in contrast to the beauty of Jennifer Connelly and Melissa George (the good girl and the bad girl) ... the dreamlike quality of the whole experience is so right.

I've seen it many times; the writing and set design, acting, direction, etc. are all first rate. Kudos to all associated with it!

This movie never gets old for me; it's one of my favorites.

In a review, the OP said that he resides in Hungary.
I would therefore assume that English is not his first language.
