My 13 year old daughter was traumatized by this movie today

She just got home from school and is still upset. Said that she started crying during the movie, couldn't stop shaking for the rest of the day. They sent her to the school psychologist who told her that a Volcano is like a Tornado. Uh, I don't get that, PLUS we are under a Tornado Watch today so now my daughter is even more freaked out.

Okay, so if you saw it (I haven't) are you surprised that a 13 year old would be traumatized by it?

Thanks for any insight.

Yes,well this is coming from a guy who watched Night of the Living Dead (1968) at the age of 5.

Im pretty sure I saw this between the age of 8-10 and loved it. Maybe you've brought your children up to be cotton wool kids?

I saw Howard Hawks' "The Thing From Another World" when I was eight. It scared me so bad that I had fears for a couple of decades. When I was in college, I worked nights in a boarding school where I was sometimes had to go between dorms
to make bedchecks.

I would still check the skies and keep my flashlight going during those trips.

Yes, I can believe your daughter was traumatized.

Sorry.

OK -
The majority of posts are from Americans & I'm a Brit, so please don't jump all over me.

There are extremes of weather in the US which would make us Brits p*** ourselves, me included.

I'm eternally grateful I don't live on a continent with live volcanoes, tornadoes,
hurricanes, the San Andreas fault.
And the rest.

I can't imagine how I would've dealt with that fear as a 13-year-old.
And I was a wussy 13-year-old.
20 years later, I was harder than a hard man's headache.
Youngsters change, develop, move on.

With respect, Brit culture is very different and young girls aren't expected to be tough at 13 years old.

And Dante's Peak is a good film - right balance of action v. narrative & character development.
I've watched it at least 10 times.

Yep - I'm with you about the gran scene.

Even more scary - the idea of anyone living near a snoozing volcano.

Maybe give her something milder to watch. Like Die Hard or The Terminator. And while we're at it, Rambo.

A ship sank at the end of the movie Titanic!
