When that guard said to that Pinball convict "Oh man, smells like someone **** in your mouth"...

... even though we knew he had something else in it in order for him to care as SPOILER, later, it helped him to hitch that hi-jack plan, do you think saying that phrase to someone, convict or not, is insulting and hurtful and do you think Pinball was a bit upset when that Guard Falzon said it?

reply

If someone said something like that to me, no matter where or when, I probably WOULD be upset and wouldn't just let it go like that. :)

reply

Pinball joked about it. He didn't want the guard looking too closely at what was in his mouth.

reply

I love that line and Pinball delivered any equally good one liner back to him. "He told me he loved me."🤣

reply

I guess both Pinball and that guard were hard arses who didn't let such moderately insulting uttered words get to them. :)

Like I told my two sons - the secret (well, one of them) to getting along in life is to not let insults get to you.

Self deprecating humor goes a long way with making friends and influencing people.

reply

Yeah, and even CRIMINALS understand that too (meaning that, for one also, they're not necessarily all "dumb").

reply

Also...

Why does the four letter s word that is a course slang of course for excrement not considered in general sense, if not outright de-facto offensive and insulting, then at least vulgar, off-putting and of a variety that hurts people INCLUDING men who are also GUILTY CRIMINALS of some or other sort?

And what if some people DID get hurt or offended by it somehow? Including folks like Pinball, even if SPOILERS, in THIS movie, it didn't bother him too much because he had much bigger concerns at hand as we later saw in this movie?

And besides, for the "offending word uttering party" (in the movie's case - Guard Falzon) - is it ALSO, for one, at least, unprofessional, immature, childish and coming across as downright incorrect especially coming from an ADULT and in a respectably authoritarian position?

reply

Generally speaking, the first person to coin the slang meant it literally. People who say utter mother****** now are just using it because it's offensive, not literal.

Regarding Falzon, sure, he could be more professional, but despite the fact that we "like" these cons because we are seeing their story, these particular cons are truly the scum of the earth and have exhausted their entire allotment of respect due. Now, it doesn't mean Falzon isn't a dick, but at this point I really don't care about his disrespectful tone with them.

"Now, it doesn't mean Falzon isn't a dick, but at this point I really don't care about his disrespectful tone with them."

And given what we see them do LATER with the plane hi-jacking and all, one could even say his attitude though far from politically correct et all is at least somewhat understandable.

reply

On a side note, I also wonder...

How did spoilers - Pinball manage to swallow or even half swallow that match and gasoline kit and keep it inside his throat long enough without choking?

And how did the other one or two criminals successfully keep a needle or two under their skin and also have them work perfectly against handcuffs?

reply

I guess "sufficient motivation"would be the answer. There a lot of things I could not see myself doing, but if it meant my life, I guess I would find a way.

reply

Not to mention the plan was to summarily execute all the guards as soon as they had guaranteed passage out of the country.

reply

Yeah, and Falzon in retrospect probably thought he was right as well.

Not to mention, that stressful situation those cons put him and the other guards through when they taped their mouths and made them pose as convicts and Falzon even got hit in his stomach by that guard on the bus but luckily, spoilers, having made him drop a copy of that recording Nicolas Cage's "Poe" character planted on him.
