One of the greatest films ever

Just stating the obvious here.

It's not perfect, nor it wants to be. It just magically clicks on every level.

If an alien wanted to understand what the art of filmmaking is about, I'd show this film.

reply

What is a perfect movie? Art is highly subjective and you'll never get a universal consensus for any given film.

"In the Mood for Love" is my perfect movie.

reply

Well in this case, perfect would be a movie that better explains points in the story that were changed during post production, like: who's crying in the shower (I don't think it's a point of this film to confuse between her and his wife) or whose kid is that (I belive if was intended to be his kid, but then in post it was changed so they never sleep together, so...why even have the kid in that scene?).
Or that montage with the cambodian news, doesn't fit the film at all.
So that's some reasons that make this not perfect.
It's not about consensus, I'm talking about something glaringly amiss.
Still one of the greatest movies ever.

Number 5 on BFI's top 20 list this year.

Great list, amazing filmmaking, although some should not be there IMHO, some are missing, and I really really think it should NOT be ranked.

Anyway, thanks for the link.

reply

I just watched it and was largely bored. Nice to look at but that's about it.

reply

What bored you?
What else did you need to be into it?

I was absorbed by it right away, it shows its themes to the viewer through pure cinema.
What more do you want from a film to keep you engaged?

reply

I needed/wanted SOMETHING to happen--anything! Instead I was barraged with a ton of fast-moving dialogue that ultimately didn't lead to anywhere above and beyond what I already knew was going to happen from having read the movie's two sentence description. I guess I expected more from an 8/10 "masterpiece."

reply

Agreed. There were no car chases or caped superheroes at all! Barely watchable.

reply

At the very least an explosion. Or a fart joke to lighten up the mood.

reply

Such a tired response on this website. I don't even watch car chase or explosion movies.
