THE WORST MR. FREEZE

Why Arnold Schwarzenegger was the worst Mr. Freeze there is, the worst Mr. Freeze there ever has been, and the worst Mr. Freeze there ever will be.

Batman and Robin (1997) did a lot of things bad --- but the worst of the worst is their poor depiction of Mr. Freeze.

I don't have a problem with Schwarzenegger's portrayal of Mr Freeze, just the movie that he does it in.

reply

Arnie was too high profile to be in a Batman film, his presence was kind of distracting.

reply

'his presence was kind of distracting.'

I do agree with that.

reply

Especially when he's so associated as The Terminator and is easy to impersonate.

It's why you don't see someone like Tom Cruise in a MCU film or a Star Wars film.

It's best to go with a lesser known or a character actor to take on the role of a super villain.

Arnie just plays himself.

It's addressed a bit in this video that reviews 1997's Steel with Shaquille O'Neal:

Basically, Warner Bros. at the time, seemed to have this twisted philosophy that they needed a big star to save a movie. With Batman & Robin, it felt like Warner Bros. believed that George Clooney wasn't a big enough of a name at the time to draw money, hence why they brought Arnold Schwarzenegger in as Mr. Freeze.

reply

Was Schumacher's idea as well to hire Schwarzenegger, Schumacher did like having all star casts or young hot actors in his films.

It's best to hire a character actor to take on the role of a super villain.

WB at that time did seem to be making a lot of junk like Batman & Robin, Steel and Wild Wild West. Not giving a damn about quality or what audiences would like to see.

reply

It's just Schwarzenegger in a super villain suit.

reply

Arnie was too high profile and his presence was too distracting.

Would've been better if Mr Freeze acted like TAS with his robotic voice.

All Arnie does is play himself.

reply

Love his iconic one liner: FREEZE ZIS!!!

reply

Fans were probably hoping Mr Freeze would've been like his TAS version with his stoic robotic voice and demeaner, which they didn't do they went the way he is.

reply

In 1995 when Batman Forever was out in theaters the rumors were that Patrick Stewart would play Freeze and Julia Roberts play Ivy.
