Melissa
Does anyone else think she is so annoying??! I like the actress but the character is awful. I love this movie except for her.

shareI felt sorry for her. I thought she was treated unfairly and deserved better. I certainly would have stuck with her, over Jo....
shareMelissa strikes me as a girl who grew up in a Southern city. She's totally urban, probably went to a private college, typically eats chicken breast, salmon, and salad. This stuff is totally alien to her. She's also a 180 to Jo, who's so obsessed; she's calm, stable, and adult.
Yeah, she fulfills "the Companion" role, where she gets to ask all the questions the viewer might wonder about. And the therapy is played for laughs, which is ironic considering how many Hollywood stars see therapists for drug addiction, alcoholism, etc. But I don't think she's annoying. She's just out of her league. You have to admit, just Dusty alone is downright crazy.
She was annoying for sure. But which character isn't annoying in this terrible movie?
Like someone else pointed out, her character has more purpose than the most of the others because she is used to explain everything to the audience. The problem is, not everything needed to be explained to the audience and that's one of the problems with this movie. But I digress...
Remember the magic words: "Please", "Thank you" and "Step off bitch!"

She is the only somewhat sympathetic character in this entire movie. Her life gets ruined by a group of of psychotic yahoos.
shareShe's the rebound person- she never had a chance. I thought she was classy and she added a lot of humor. Her interactions with Dusty were some of my favorite parts of the movie- facial expressions and lines; in particular, "You people are crazy and she (Jo) is the craziest one of all!" You can tell she was just fed up. They are crazy, but passionate. I think she was happy to survive the truck dropping in front of her and couldn't believe anyone would want to go again...like a ride at a theme park.
shareI would have stuck with her over Jo. Jo fits the standard crazy ex profile, getting her men back by being dramatic and having a lot of problems, thus satisfying their white knight egos. Melissa even says so. Go back to her because she needs you. She was spot on about Jo when she called her out for her ploys to get Billy back. All in all she was a competent therapist.
shareShe's meant to be annoying, of course. The idea is we want Bill to end up with Jo, and that is trickier if Melissa is more likeable.
Unfortunately, Melissa also represents 'the audience' - the character who is most naive, and inexperienced in the world of tornadoes, the character to whom all the exposition is aimed.
Making the 'audience' character so annoying was a pretty bad miscalculation to me.
Never defend crap with 'It's just a movie'
