You know, someone will make a joke/reference to a movie or show and either they or another character will explain it? For some reason, it doesn't bother me here as much as later movies/shows.
shareKind of yes. It was the first real "self aware" horror movie where characters not only acknowledge previous horror movies, but realize they are living inside one. And they recognize the cliches and common pratfalls as they walk into them.

It restarted the horror genre in the 90’s.
It restarted the teen genre.
It started the obsession with twist endings.
And they were watching and talking about the original Halloween, which came out in 1978. Crazy how Halloween was only 18 years old when Scream came out, and now Scream is 24 years old and Halloween is 42 years old.
It feels like just yesterday this movie came out, and now it's been longer from Scream to 2020 than it was from Halloween (1978) to Scream (1996).
