Mainstream film was always a power struggle between the artists and the suits. At some point in the last 20 years the suits pulled ahead and flooded cinemas with sterile vehicles focused only on the bottom line. Netflix at least offers some hope.
Netflix, really? There is no creative freedom there for anybody not Scorsese. How many original movies or shows there does not have any of the following:
Black people oppressed by white people
Mary Sue leading roles
Every southener is a borderline analphabetic extreme racist
Non white people being prominent characters and living in real world historical settings where non white people was more or less nonexistent
Prominent gay couple (*scenes deleted when localized to China*...)
"How many original movies or shows there does not have any of the following:

David and the Elves; Fever Dream, A World Without, etc.

Memories of a Murderer, Black Island, Xtreme, etc.

The Witcher, Dolly Parton Musicare, Fatherhood, etc.

Madres Paralelas, The Misadventures of Hedi and Cokeman, Bob Ross: Happy Accidents, etc, etc. . .
I could keep going, but what's the point? You're an idiot. Go sit down somewhere.
Uh huh. Look: if you want to start a New conversation, fine. But first: own up to the fact that your *original* statement is demonstrably false. So much so that it's ridiculous to say it, let alone draw conclusions based upon it.
Trends are cyclical. It'll come back around. In the late 90's/early 2000s, dramas and especially indie films were all the rage. That was largely due to the seemingly overnight, massive success of Quentin Tarantino, who spun low budget, indy content into GOLD which rivaled or even dominated Hollywood studio productions.
I personally think that he only made two or three great films, but he definitely changed the whole dynamic of how Hollywood scouted for and chose projects for a couple of decades.
It'll happen again.
Will it? Movie studios don’t bother with mid-budget quality thrillers anymore because rebooting/remaking a property that has brand recognition is easier and can lead to gigantic box office. Plus, the studios have been captured by woke ideologues who are happy to burn down the company if it means cramming a load of woke dogma into the ‘entertainment’.
They don’t even nurture new talent. The best directors are still those guys from the 70’s and they’re going to die off soon. Movie stars are becoming irrelevant. Seems like Hollywood is fucked beyond repair.
