Colt 1911 .45 ACP

for all the gun nuts out there, especially those who are crazy about 1911's...

in detailed responses, if you dont mind :), could you tell me who is or who you think the best maker of modern 1911's is...best being: accuracy, reliability, looks, etc.

i've heard Colt and Para Ordnance make the best...i've also heard the SigSaur 1911 GSR is a fantastic gun...my uncle is a gunsmith and he says the Sig version is great although i've heard different...

what do the you all think? your opinion is greatly appreciated thank you so much!

Hawkeye,
What you're getting here are a mess of subjective personal opinions. As far as production guns go, all of the top manufacturers will work fine, and in that vein, contrary to what one poster said, Para is not junk.
If you're really looking for the "Best" money can buy, look past the production guns to a Rock River Arms or an Ed Brown. Pricey, but hand built without the crap MIM internal parts.
Springfield Armory's Custom Shop guns are also hand built and a cut above.

Your uncle is a gunsmith and your father is a retired police man? Some family.

Being sentimental, I prefer the original standard military issue Colt 1911. The ones in the film appear to be the WWI model with the longer trigger, shorter hammer shield, and the diamond pattern grips which would be appropriate for the film's time period as the model 1911A1 came in the mid 20's and the M1911 would be sold fairly cheaply to the civilian market. Even 60 years old (provided proper maintenance was given.) still a rugged, reliable and accurate pistol that packs a hard punch.

The Para-Ordinance made P-14 (basically a Canadian 1911 clone) is actually a fantastic pistol, I don't know where the fellow before got the idea that it's a lousy pistol, maybe because it's not U.S. made. Anyway, The P-14 is a tough combat pistol that has even better accuracy then the original Colt made 1911 and the 1911A1 due to the barrel being fixed with the frame, it's used often in shooting competitions for a reason. Addtionally it features a staggered stack magazine, doubling the ammuntion per magazine from 7 to 14. The only drawbacks really are that with the double amount of ammunition per magazine and it's stainless steel frame, it's even heavier then the Colt Made 1911.

Basically I'm happy with both. The 1911 has a sense of Nostalgia and history about it, the good old fashioned simplicity and solid design and the P-14's high quality craftsmanship and performance made me a fan of both pistols.

What are you talking about? The Para barrel is like all the rest of the swinging link 1911's. Barrel fixed to the frame?

I own 2 Paras and three other 1911's. All the barrels function essentially the same way. Some with bushings, some without.
