Love this movie but something about the end has always bothered me...

So, Cahill uses a straw to keep the two pieces of the detonator separated...
I'm not expert on electromagnetism but... Would a thin piece of plastic be enough to stop the detonator from making it's connection and detonating the bomb? I feel like the plastic is so thin that it wouldn't be able to block the electromagnetic signal from jumping from one side of the metal to the other (thus completing the circuit and setting off the bomb)... Any physics buffs reading that have anything to say about this?

This is a stupid post because if they didn’t come up with that solution there’d be no movie. You’re not that smart to bring this angle into the discussion
Yes, it could very well be a plausible answer to the issue of stopping the bomb, but can you think of a better solution
The solution totally created the tension and angst of that scene and even gave Cahill a hero part

It was not an electromagnetic signal. The trigger was a low voltage control circuit. The only thing necessary was to prevent the contacts from connecting.
