Watched it again, still awful

I have tried to watch this movie, but I still can't stand it. I don't find it funny. Leslie Mann is the most boring actress I can think of, she wasn't even funny in Knocked up, 40 year old virgin, Big Daddy....and Jim Carey is gross in this movie. Overactor, just to much. When will he get it, we have all seen him overact, do something else. It is by far a horrible movie. Way to go Ben.

I don't think it's much of a comedy, nor is it much of thriller film, just a combination of those, without overdoing one or the other, so I think it's the wrong mindset to expect watch this all the way and think that it was supposed to be a straight-out comedy. If you do want it to go towards either genre more, they might not get the PG13 rating (and a plot like this has potential to be done well if it's rated R).

The overacting didn't bug me at all, since that seems character specific, akin to a kid trying to act out scenes from his favorite TV shows (and that totally plays into character). I felt if he didn't overact, the character won't have much of an impact, and the movie would become a borefest. I could barely count any actor out there who can do something like that at the time anyway.

I just went onto Cable Guy's page on an impulse and still see the score sitting at 5.9. I'm not saying this to be contrary but I do believe the Cable Guy deserves recognition as a great comedy of the 90s and it's sad that it still seems to be paying the price for going so much against what audiences expected of Carey at that time - and now, come to think of it. Carey went against his public image so he and the film got panned. It's the same thing that happened to Seth Rogan in Observe and Report. He played a character darker in tone than the ones he normally plays, the lovable stoners, in a film that employed a different kind of humour. That spelled backlash.

Time is the nearest thing we have to barometer of 'good' in most types of artform, cinema included. Some creations will see successive generations of people connect with them because they hit on something, they have something to say. I think that on this score, Cable Guy will eventually outlive Ace Ventura, Yes Man, The Mask, Bruce Almighty or Mr. Popper's Penguins.

I really liked Jim Carrey's performance as the titled character but I do wish they could have chose another actor to play Steve Kovacs instead of Matthew Broderick, I also didn't think much of Leslie Mann's performance in the movie either, I wouldn't have liked this movie very much if it wasn't for Jim Carrey playing the titled character

The part where he smiles in the van has more humor than other higher rated comedies have in their whole run time.

It's certainly flawed, but I still think it deserves recognition for having some pretty hilarious scenes amongst all the other mess
