Car salesman... gay?
Does anyone know the reason for this charater being in this film. I am not a homophobe, but I think there seemed to be a little gay theme going on there between him and segundo. Any comments?

shareWhat if there is a "gay theme going on there?" Would it ruin something for you?
You'd probably be best served by asking the authors, no? Who else would know?
I never got that. He just seemed to be an assertive person interested in A) making a sale, or B) Meeting new people, since the car lot appeared pretty slow.

"I am not a homophobe" = "I AM a homophobe."
Have you never bought a new car? Car salesmen (particularly in the 50's, 60's & 70's) say anything -ANYTHING to make a sale. If that means ingratiating one's self to the customer, well, whatever it takes...
How do you explain Campbell Scott's character (Bob) handing over a "Low Financing" brochure to the vegetable vendor during the meal? is that also "Gay Code?"
Puh-leeeeeeze.
Do you think Minnie Driver is American?
YOU need to relax. Jesus. not everything said online is a direct attack on you as a person, you know.
shareHe wasn't gay he was a car salesman. Why was he in the film? Secundo wants the restaurant to work. Primo is an artist and doesn't care about money, but Secundo's idea of success is money and the things it buys. He wants a Cadillac but can't afford one. That's why he's looking at one and that's why Campbell Scott is talking to him buddy-like and takes him for a ride.
shareSales = seduction: it runs through the film. Primo accusing the opposition of raping cuisine. Secundo getting the booze.
shareGet off the guy's back... he asked a fu king simple question about the dude appearing to flirt with Secondo. Deal with it, straighten out your panties.
I am a homophobe & ummmm am I supposed to be ashamed of that? LOL! Sorry. I have no shame over it. I had no choice in the matter, I was BORN a homophobe!
And I have Homophobe Pride Parades every June... you're all invited.
But that's not the point.... that car salesman, Bob, was SIZZLING hot. I'm shocked he wasn't in more big films. A great actor, too!
This is one of my all time favorite films, and I just re-watched it tonite. I was curious to see what others' response to it is.
For the record, the car salesman is played by Campbell Scott as the quintessential car salesman, and gay has nothing to do with his characterization. He is also co-director of the film with Stanley Tucci, the actor starring as Secundo and co-writer of the screenplay.
Campbell is a fairly well-known, moderately-talented actor in his own right, (better known for his pretty-boy romantic leads), as well as being son of the brilliant George C. Scott. Campbell is very good as actor in this, but I personally feel that his talents lie more in the directorial line.
Big Night, Babette's Feast, Chocolat, and Like Water For Chocolate are my favorite Foodie films of all.
Eat, Drink, Man, Woman is also pretty good. I didn't care much for Tampopo, though. The prevalent theme of all of the best food films is how the creation and enjoyment of the feast is representative and indicative of one's joie de vivre; or, Food as the Soul of Life.
This philosophy works for me!

Actually, yes. Yes you are.

I also had the same impression about the car salesman being gay .. and I thought there would be a follow-up 'explanation' about his role later on in the movie, but no ..
In any case, it is not so irrelevant that we thought he was gay -- given the fact that Campbell Scott does appear to have homosexual traits and manners -
has anyone seen The Dying Gaul ?? See it. It is not so off base to think he is gay.
Why is everyone so paranoid and jumpy whenever one makes a point !?! Relax.
Ya know, he also played a cancer patient in DYING YOUNG.... Yet he is still alive!!!!! How can this be????
Maybe he's just a really good actor... One that doesn't have to blow up buildings or shoot terrorists, to prove his masculinity with the roles he chooses... Dare to dream, a thinking-man.

I was rooting for the sales man. I wanted him to get a sale
shareDid you miss Scundos last conversation with Pascal, where Pascal says that he is a businessman and he'll do any thing, say anything, be anything...something like that. The car salesman is the worst example of this. This man has no personality.I have a bother.. I have two kids, etc. agreeing with everything and enjoying nothing. The last time you see him he is leaving in a car I bet he doesn't even know who he is leaving with.
Maybe the Cadillac represents your "Soul".

I'm so glad saomeone else brought this up first, because as I watched the "test drive" scene with Tucci and Scott, the whole scene had a very homo-erotic feel to it. When the scene first began, I thought Scott's character ws gay, but then decided he wasn't, but he was a very touchy-feely kind of guy and did keep putting his arm around Secundo...I don't know...maybe it was supposed to be left up to the viewer to interpret and if that's true, it's really a brilliant scene.
shareI'm of the opinion that people who see "gayness" in things they watch "doth protest too much".
The quotation I provide, is "code" for "it takes one to know one".
The character wasn't gay. Campbell Scott isn't gay. And if either one or both had been gay, SO WHAT????
The car salesman also took Pascal for a test ride. And I'll bet Pascal bought the new model. Whether Gabrielle would be riding beside him is another thing...
