What Did Everyone Think of The Ending?

i just finished the series and was just curious how everybody liked the ending? did you guys think it was a good way to end it or should it have closed in some other way? i personally loved the whole series and felt the ending was quite touching.

reply

I did enjoy it, but it's obvious that the show got cancelled without much notice because it did seem a bit rushed.

The only thing I didn't like was the fact that Dick erased Mary's memory of the last 6 years, but no one else?

reply

I haven't completed my 3rd Rock DVD collection.... is that how the series ends on DVD, with Mary's memory being erased? I only saw the finale once, and it concluded with Dick abducting Mary. Apparently this ending only aired one time in syndication, but I figured it'd be on the DVD. Of course, the first season DVDs consist of the edited syndication prints and they didn't bother to put the bizarre alternate ending from the 3-D episode (which was released on VHS and is credited on the DVD cover) on disc either, so I guess it doesn't surprise me much -- but it was better to end the show with Mary being abducted by her beloved alien, rather than simply having her memory erased. Looks like it's on You Tube:

lmaoooo i knew it! i always remembered the ending having mary looking up to the sky or something while a light shines bright and she is brought along with dick.

I also always remembered thinking back to the series and what it would be like for mary as a giant meat sack among purple tubes.

I rewatched the series and the ending was different. I was like wtf! i thought maybe i didnt remember it correctly or something, but i guess i did lol.

I must've seen the finale dozens of times and I've never thought about that - boy, do I feel dumb now lol

OT: I love the ending, the part with the Solomons singing their mission song never fails to move me. I agree about it feeling rushed though, but I'm kind of glad it ended before it really started to go downhill.

"Sir, let those laugh that win."

reply

^ I love when they sing the mission song! Also, I love Tommy's little breakdown when he yells "I...DON'T...WANT..TO...GOOOOOOOO!!!" and cries - lol, even though it's funny I felt sad for the poor thing lol

"The only thing I didn't like was the fact that Dick erased Mary's memory of the last 6 years, but no one else?"

I haven't watched the ending for a while but, from memory, I don't think Dick erased her memories entirely. I think he said something along the lines of 'What we had together will still be there, deep inside and you'll know it, but you won't feel the loss, hurt etc.' So I think she would still remember him, but she wouldn't have all those bad feelings associated with him leaving.

That's my interpretation anyway.

Of course, that doesn't work if you consider the alternate ending where he re-appears and she screams 'who are you?" but I never considered that the correct ending anyway.

it wasn't cancelled. it had good ratings. 10-15 million viewers 10 yeears ago was considered decent ratings. Now and days it would be considered huge ratings... the show's ratings were never sagging, it stood steady.

Joseph Gordon Levitt began going to college in NY and wasn't part of the show as a full time member. If you notice, Levitt was only in half of the episodes..... The whole alternate universe where they are in New York was to accomodate Levitt's school schedule.

Lithgow said it was enough, he moved to other things after 3rd Rock.... Cause when 3Rd Rock was finishing its air, he was doing a broadway show called Secret of Success, some title like that.

I watched all the episodes when aired and still an avid fan.....

But I do agree Season 6 was losing its luster, the four man ensemble wasn't there. The writers weren't as creative and Tommy wasn't a full time cast member...... So Lithgow said, its time to leave gracefully. And that's what happened. And to be honest, I agree. Each Season, there was atleast half of the episodes that would put me in tears whereas Season 6 was just a few handful and chuckles. I been doing a netflix marathon watching alot of my old favorite shows and I did not skip one episode of 3rd Rock. Other shows, if I saw it before and I wasn't too thrilled with them, I would skip them. But not with 3RD Rock. i would say, it was and still one of the most hilarious shows to ever come out. Only other show that put me into tears as much as 3rd Rock was Boston Legal.......

I became a fan of 3rd ROCK FROM THE SUN when more than 13 years ago when it aired -dubbed in Spanish- in a Peruvian tv channel broadcasted in all Latin-America. Unfortunately the series was not a success and they only showed a bunch of episodes from the first season but it was more than enough to captivate me. I mean, who could possibly resist the funny Dr. Dick Solomon or the hilarious Harry -by the way, the dubbing of the series was great and both characters were as funny in Spanish as they are in English...

Thanks to the internet -and the fact that I learnt English well enough to understand it without subtitles, 'cause there are no subtitles available for this sitcom on the whole internet- I was able to get the whole 6 seasons and I just finished watching the 6th season finale, including the alternate ending where Dick abducts Marry -which I preferred- and some behind the scenes shooting.

I just have words of gratitude for all the people who made this amazing show possible. I own them many hours of entertainment and hundreds of good laughs.

I loved the ending. It was very moving, Mary realizing she doesn't want to leave and the Solomons leaving with a song, chokes me up every time. But I was disappointed some of the other characters, like Nina and Tommy's GFs, didn't get better goodbyes. All in all though I think the show went out strong.

reply

Either I missed it, or just don't recall, but what happened in the ending?

reply

I just watched it and I couldn't help wondering what all the other people that knew them (and didn't have their memories erased) would think when they just disappeared? We'd be seeing news stories "entire family disappears" "Mary Albright suspect" etc.

You're probably right, but are you sure it wasn't canceled? I only ask because Season 6 has a few references to "cancellation," especially the open with the alien awards show. Just watched the final season the last couple of days and it sort of hangs like a pall over the season a bit.

I liked the alternative ending where Dick comes back for Mary after the rest of the team leave and he says something like "you did not think I could leave you did you". I love the idea of them being together.

Dirty night.

reply

Yeah I also lucked out somehow and saw the alternate ending. I do like the idea that he came back for her because it fits with his selfish love. And even more so the fact that she forgot him so it made it all the worse for her, as his stunts usually are. I also agree I wanted more of a goodbye for Nina and the crew, Strudwick getting pwned was very funny, but I would have liked to see his daughter and August get some time...perhaps more time for the class and less for that singer guy.

I felt the ending went against the whole feel of the series! A much better ending, in my opinion, would have been if they were granted permission to stay on earth for the rest of their lives! And the whole thing about Dick erasing Mary's memory, but no one elses, was absolutely stupid - for one thing, Mary would seem insane when people later ask her "whatever happened to Dick, the man you dated for six years?" and she responded "who? I have no idea who you are talking about?" or when her colleagues mentioned Dick to her and she had no idea who they were referring to! the ending was stupid and went against the whole series!

i didn't like the ending because it was the ending. but i like that the series went out strong. oh and yes dick only erasing mary's memory was a big plothole.

When the whole family just vanishes literally into thin air obviously LOTS of questions would be asked. What happened, were they murdered, abducted, kidnapped, etc. And when the police inevitably question Mary and she knows NOTHING about them, literally NOTHING, things would get mighty strange! This was a terrible plot hole and it was truly an awful ending!

I cried. I watched the series for the first time this month in one straight run though on netflix. It was so sad! I know it wasn't 6 years for me but I still felt very connected with them

reply

A much better ending would have been if they were allowed to live the rest of their lives in their earth bodies!

It's been a while but I think I saw the alternate ending. I don't remember her memory beinh erased. I thinks it's much better to have them ending together after everything

reply

her memory is still erased but then dick comes back and abducts her

reply

It's just a sitcom. But when I was watching the last episode on my reviewing on the series I started to tear up. It was such a great show. I know it had to end some time. It just really got to me. Easily one of the best TV shows of all time.

reply

the first half was pretty good. the second half wasnt. it needed to end with a bang not a whimper.

it needed more conflict especially over the fact that they were aliens. after all that was premise of the show. they could have had someone tip off the feds for some reason. Nina did say she thought Dick was a terrorist.

instead of wipping Marrys memory, Dick should have offered to give her something to remember him by. then after he beams up, his ear falls into her hands.

i was also disappointed that Dick didnt point out the irony that he was essentially doing the job of an anthrologist all along. he was living her dream in a sense. he was much better at her job. and he should brag about it like he does.

instead of abducting Marry, Dick should have abducted Dr Strudwick to exact his revenge.

Tommy should have stayed behind to retire. and there could have been a joke about their next assignment.

reply

I'm glad it had an ending unlike so many other shows that just stop.

BUT it would have been cool to have a killer spaceship pick them up instead of beaming up.

Loved the series and glad it had the run it did.

Season 6 was definitely the weakest. I can see why it was cancelled.
With no Tommy the show wasn't as good.

I felt that the ending was very rushed, could have done with another twenty minutes to actually complete the story.

reply

The weirdest part of the ending was all picture taking inside the makeshift spaceship. It was obvious they were REALLY taking pictures. Kind of cool and funny but still weird they would be taking keepsakes during filming. A very underrated and underwatched show.

reply

Holy crap all of those suggestions are excellent. Finale wasn't great. Wasn't terrible either. Pretty much in line with the rest of season 6.
