In the bible does Gabriel really betray God?

In the bible does Gabriel really betray God and does bad things. Because in constantine and the prophecy the portray Gabriel as a backstabber.

"I'm not interested in Saturn, I said Mars."

No. In the Bible, Gabriel is one of the two archangel (Michael is the second one). Gabriel is the angel of the Anunciation and is the personal messenger of God to mankind. The thing with Gabriel though is that he is also an angel of death and destruction. When God is angry with us, it is Gabriel that he sends to punish us. On the other hand, He sends Michael as the angel for protection. He's the one who is sent to protect us. Add to that that the story of Lucifer as a fallen angel is a particularly interesting one. The idea that God's most beautiful and favourite angel can betray Him is very seductive myth and pulls on many strings in our psyche. So as a modern writer, if you want to retell that story in a modern setting who is the best candidate for the next Lucifer? Gabriel is definitely that one. I think this is why Gabriel is so often protrayed as the angel who gets over-obsessed with winning God's love and feels mankind is a rival.

In the Bible, no Gabriel never betrays God, Lucifer and the fallen angels are the only ones who "turned" on God. With the fall of Lucifer, Gabriel stepped into what is considered the role Lucifer had in the graces of God. so as some stories are told with a history repeating itself, Gabriel would be the next to betray God since he was Lucifer's successor.

Sorry, two's company, and three's an adult movie.

No, in the Bible only Satan is mentioned by name as having betrayed God.

Well , Constantine TECHNICALLY doesn`t count if you`re talkin` about The Archangel ! THAT Gabriel was An Angel/Human Halfbreed with The Name and SOME of The Powers and Memories of The Archangel !

It isn't based on anything. Given that Gabriel is, post-Lucifer's fall, essentially top dog of the choirs of angels, he is the obvious choice for the leader of a second rebellion.

It seems that the film makers of these two films are playing on the idea of power corrupting due to unchecked flaws in the individual. Both Lucifer and Gabriel let their jealousy run wild and lose their faith and trust in God, causing them to abuse the trust God had for them and went rogue, Lucifer leading open rebellion and Gabriel being more cunning and covert.

As far as the movie go I was under the impression that Gabriel's war with God was for "change" and not for "control" like Lucifer's rebellion.

Only in the 23rd chapter of Revelation. But that didn't make canon. -_^

I always wonder why Hollywood portrays Gabriel in negative shades. There is never any evidence in any book that he was anything other than god's messenger. I can see no other reason except that he is very prominent in Islamic texts. Gabriel is mentioned more times than any other angels.

They don't always portray Gabriel in negatives shades. I don't know if you have seen the movie 'Gabriel' but in that movie Gabriel is the good Archangel in purgatory who fights evil and saves people while Michael is the one who has turned his back on God and is the villain.

In some versions of 'Van Helsing' such as the 2004 movie with Hugh Jackson Van Helsing is the human reincarnation of Gabriel too.
