Why do so many people hate this movie?

Sure it's no citizen kane, but then again what is? I thought it was very funny, with entertaining moments. What do people not like about it to the point where they hate it?

I love this movie, only because of Jeremy London.

Is it a "good movie"? Not at all. But it is an entertaining movie that I can watch anytime and enjoy. It's up there with Kissing a Fool, and Dirty Work for things I can watch anytime and always be entertained.

I think if it weren't for Jason Lee though it would have been highly forgettable for me.

this is the first kevin smith film i saw and it still remains my favorite. i remember being bitterly dissapointed with dogma (and jay & bob strike back wasnt much better. just didnt compare. i dont mind dogma now ive seen it a few times but ive always found mallrats much much funnier and less up its own ass.

I don't, I mean I am not one for crude humored movies like Clerks 2 and Jay and Silent Bob strike back but I really like this movie. I found it to be really funny.

Citizen Kane is not funny.

I'm not sure why either. I just bought the 10 anniv edition after not having seen the movie in 8 or 9 years. The movie has held up well over the years. The dialogue is so sharp and witty and just generally funny from beginning to end. It's been theorized that the reason it flopped the way it did was because of the gross out humor and excessive "potty mouth" language. I've heard that Smith had to tone down some of the humor and take out some of the curse words because it was too raunchy. To me, this doesn't make sense. Before Mallrats, there was Animal House and the Porky's trilogy, which had both elements and they were successful. And only a few years after Mallrats, American Pie was released and was a massive success. I think when entering high school, there are certain movies that every kid should see. Fast Times...., the 80s John Hughes teen movies, Dazed and Confused. Mallrats should also be added to this list. It was for me anyway. Movies like Mallrats, Joe Dirt, Wet Hot American Summer, Detroit Rock City, Grandma's Boy, MacGruber, and Baseketball have all been crapped on by critics and film-goers everywhere over the years and they all are under-rated comedy gems. You either get the humor or you don't.

Because they don't know what true comedy is. This movie is smart and hilarious.
