Robert Downey Jr.

It says on this site that it was during the filming of this movie that Robert Downey Jr. went public about his drug problem and that completing this film was problematic because of that, but you know what? Whatever Robert was smoking, he still gives the best performance in this uneven movie and is the strongest reason for watching it...anyone agree?

Despite critics ... I like this guy very much, as an actor, of course. I liked his performance in "Chaplin", and even though I haven't seen all of his movies, I feel that he does a decent job in the ones that I have.
Yes, he does manage to steal the scenes once in a while, but I also like this movie for other personal reasons; not just Downey. It may not be the greatest movie ever made, but it touches family issues (blending in some rare humor), and that is something that we may relato to at least once in our life. I still say, the best scene is probably the one where Claudia goes to see her sister and they have that discussion in the basement.

… So I don’t have a heart … big f ucking deal!! …

Did anyone see a connection there with Geraldine Chaplin playing the goofy aunt, and actually being Charlie Chaplin's real life daughter? I haven't seen her in movies since the 70's, which made me think she was so admiring of Downey's brilliant portrayal of her father, that she signed on to co-star with him? Just wondering.....this movie was made after Chaplin, right?

I couldn't agree more... he is the reason I watch that movie. His character is so charming and loveable.

He was a druggie, but he's been sober for quite a while now, and I have to say I'm really glad he is.

You can almost hear the movie change gears when Robert Downey Jr's character arrives. He ad-libbed practically his entire performance (as per Jodie Foster on the DVD features) and clearly was high as a kite. The guy is a genius. He gave a better performance stoned than many give sober (I'm talking to YOU, Tom Cruise!)

I was almost bored to tears until his character showed up, and the moment he did it was like new life, new colours, everything. He completely turned the movie around. I love characters with high energy like that, (even if he was high). I heard that he did a lot of his scenes on drugs, was that true then? And I had a feeling...you said this was confirmed on the features....I had a feeling he was making stuff up off the top of his head. You mean he ad-libbed almost every scene he was in?? (I'm sort of asking you to repeat that, just to make sure I understood you right) Even stoned, THAT is an incredible talent!

As twisted as this is, this is one of my favorite performances of his, (right up there with Kiss Kiss Bang Bang...I haven't seen a lot of his films yet...) Hearing that he ad-libbed it, in my opinion, does nothing to diminish that.

If you are a fan, look for 'Air America'. This is a very funny movie he made with Mel Gibson.

Totally agree, and he's usually the best thing about any movie he chooses to do. Anyone who can give several movie-stealing performances even when completely off their face is definitely worthy of my respect. The man's level of talent is frightening! Those who appreciate the craft of acting only have better things to look forward to now that he's gotten himself straight.

Robert. Is always good in whatever film he's in.Even if that film sucks. He always finds a way to shine in the darkest of light. He's amazing. He's a rare actor of his kind that can just bring out the best in average, bad films.

He had Like ESPN.

He's an amazing actor. I thought he'd win the Oscar for Chaplin, but maybe someday he'll find the right script? I particularly liked him in Renaissance too, and in In Dreams, and in a lot of other stuff. The guy's so good--I can't wait to see what he's in next. I wish I was his agent. I’d keep him playing interesting and challenging roles.

I really want to see this, and being a huge RDJ fan, I want to see most all of his movies if possible, but this is rarer to get so I will probly end up buying it, but I don't want to if he's not really in it. So is he in the movie for a long time or only a couple clips.

And for that matter, if anyone can help, in movies like US Marshalls (and any other "supporting prominent" roles he was in, can you please let me know? It's so hard weeding them out!!

THANKS!!

He's not the star here, but he's a big supporting role. And he's hilarious. And adorable. Get this one.

Watch Kiss Kiss Bang Bang if you haven't already, it's great.
A Scanner Darkly is pretty amazing as well.
Two Guys and a Girl.. I didn't like it that much, but he was gorgeous and good as always.
Less Than Zero is a must for any RDJ fan..

Hope that helps.
