Tommy Lee Jones was great in this

You could tell he was having fun playing a psycho with dueling personalities.

Jones is great in most things. It's usually the movie that sucks, not him.

reply

He always plays fun characters in everything.

I disagree, I think this was one of his less successful efforts.

Which wasn't his fault, that was because Jim Carrey played everything so damn big and camp that Jones couldn't use his own naturalistic style, he had to amp things up too, whether he liked it or not - and it was clear that he didn't like it. He looked like he was ready to strangle Carrey in some scenes, and you can't blame him for that, I think Carrey is fantastically talented but working with him can't be fun.

Jones would have been a lot happier with a different co-star, one who gave him the room to be subtle. He does subtle so well...

You always impress me, Otter. I think a scene of Tommy Lee actually murdering the loathsome Carry would have made a FORTUNE, especially if it had been protracted and painful for Carry, like swallowing-his-tongue pailful.

reply

Hey, pitch the idea! Carry and Jones together again, and Jones finally gets to strangle Carrey! It'd make a mint, because who hasn't thought about strangling Jim Carrey!

Carrye is a fantastic actor, of course, but damn I wouldn't want to spend time with him.

reply

I agree, indeed!

He was more or less a Joker rip-off. Not to mention the psychology of his supposed character is ridiculous. Granted, he was fine when he was having a casual speech to someone like the beginning or the circus, but he overacts so much when he is supposed to be upset for any reason. Jones did a much better comedic threatining performance in Under Siege.

I preferred Carrey far more. He particularly did a fabulous job when he was Edward Nygma and not the Riddler. Even then he was better than Jones in his outfit.

What was interesting about Jim Carrey's take on the role was, his only complaint was that the brass staff he was running around with in the showdown scene with Batman was heavy and hurt his arm while filming the scene.
