Worf + Ocean = Funny. Beverly + Ocean = Not funny. Why?

I don't get this. As a prank the crew drops Worf into the Ocean and everyone thinks it's funny, even Beverly. But when Data pushes Beverly into the ocean no one finds it amusing at all instead they act as if Data made something offensive.

WHY?! Why would the same thing be funny with worf and offensive with Beverly?

Not to mention that it's not even real water since they're on the holodeck. So there's no risk for a shark attack, drowning, pneumonia... and it is even her own idea. Sort of. "Be spontanius", "do something unexpected".

WHY IS IT SO OFFENSIVE?! What am I missing?!

I assume it's considered rude to do it to a lady?

I however found it hilarious, especially since she knocked Worf back into the water on her way down. Comedy gold.

In the 23rd century? Seriously? Or for that matter, in the 1990s? Seriously?

Of course it was rude in the 90's.

Bad writing, dull characters.

It was hilarious.

What did everyone in the theater do after that scene when I watched it in 94?

Laughed. Every one of them.

It was funny, Data. It was funny.

reply

Not only was it funny, but after Geordi ripped on him for doing it, I wanted Data to push Geordi in the ocean.

Data: "Anybody else think it's not funny?"

There is a subtle difference that does make one situation funny and the other not. Not worthy of the scolding he got for it though.

Yes. The suprise twist after is often more fun than the [in retrospect] boring gag.

I thought because Riker did it to Worf by accident, Data did it to Beverly deliberately.

reply

Riker totally did it on purpose, but Beverly & others have [supposedly?] gone thru this ceremony when she got a bump in rank and most failed at getting the cap and end up in the drink so it wouldn't be funny for Bev to be pushed in

reply

It WAS funny. Geordi just lacked a sense of humor- evidenced by 7 seasons on TV and four movies. Geordi never indicates he has a sense of humor in all those years.

reply

Yeah I thought it was funny as well. It kind of serves someone right when they're laughing at another persons misfortune then it's not funny when it happens to them. That's called a hypocrite!

reply

Because Geordi says it wasn't.

It probably was real water. The holodeck creates real matter like a replicator for some things, besides if it is simulating water then it is capable of blocking air and causing drowning or being cold enough to trigger other physical changes.
