I don't normally comment on movies I dislike, but I think that "When the Whales Came" is one of only about 5 or 6 films I just couldn't take. The acting and cinematography were... poor.

"A Little Princess" (1995)
"The Englishman Who Went up a Hill but Came Down a Mountain" (1995). This one really does have the same atmospheric feel as "The Secret of Roan Innish" but the locale is Wales.
"Night of the Shooting Stars (La Notte di San Lorenzo)" (Italy 1982)
"The Tree of Wooden Clogs" ("L'Albero dei Zoccoli) (Italy 1978)
"Ciao Professore" (Italy 1992)

One more film I would add:
"Girl With a Pearl Earring" (2003) a "quiet personal film with good cinematography'. Some of the scenes look like paintings by Vermeer who is a character in the movie.

One more great movie to add to the list, "Local Hero". This is a wondeful movie starring Peter Reigert & Bert Lancaster; dir. by Bill Forsyth. Can't get much better than that. Except if it were directed by John Sayles maybe.

I was watching this "one of my favorite films" at a center when I found out that one of the actresses in the movie was in the group watching. I really liked her and she took me outside and told me that she had been one of the towns people, but wouldn't tell me which one. It was a big surprise and makes the movie even more personal than before. Wherever she is, I hope she will come visit us again.

I am Dina(2002). It's about the life of a girl who's life is changed dramaticaly after she caused the terrible fate of her mother. The cinematography is amazing, the filming, scenery and music is stunning. It's very personal and folows the story in Dina's point of view, she sort of tells the story her self. You should also read the book, even if it might be long (over 500 pages). Though it's Norwegian and with some strange accents, it's really good!
