SEVERELY underrated

Idk if all the critics and people who rated this low on here were on crack when they did or what but I think this is a great movie despite what people say. Great action, suspense and acting. Streep obviously always is great, Straitham is awesome, Bacon plays the villian role excellently and John C. Reilly is also a great actor but he's just ok in this as Bacons slightly slow sidekick. Overall it has it's flaws but I don't care what ppl say it's still one of my faves.

Yeah, I'm a little surprised at the not-so-great rating here. Saw TRW in a theater during its initial release. The river action scenes really looked great on a big screen.and were pretty well choreographed. I think it was the first bad guy role I ever saw Kevin Bacon play and I thought he was a very good villain. I'm watching it again now, and I hadn't realized that the Ranger was Benjamin Bratt! Though not perfect, it's a very competent action/thriller IMO. I'd easily give it a 7.5.

This was always one of those "good but not great" movies to me.

That being said, I'm starting to appreciate more things about this movie - besides the outstanding performances - with every re-watch.

Hey there, Johnny Boy, I hope you fry!

Well it iss pretty formulaic though and always tends towards corniness when given a chance. Fortunately, once they hit the river, those chances are few and far between and the action/suspense never lets up, even if we can pretty much guess the outcome. It's efficiently filmed and competently acted, and certainly held my attention throughout.

I can't really see anyone with sense rating it below a 7. MAYBE a 6. But a lot rate it even worse than that! I rated it an 8 because it was enjoyable all the way through, really.

What's weird is on directv it shows around 50% for viewer and critic scores, yet it rates it 4 and 1/2 stars out of five. Just a bit of a contradiction there.... I guess they rate it by some other standard than those percentages.

I'm watching it right now and the scenery is breathtaking. The suspense is nicely built up and all the actors play their parts well.

Utah! Get me two.

I liked it a lot. Meryl Streep was great, Kevin Bacon makes an excellent villain, the rest of the cast was fine too. The scenery was gorgeous, the story was good, there was some suspense.

Meryl Streep's arms looked like she had been river rafting her whole life. I read somewhere she trained for months preparing for this role. She is awesome.

I agree with all the great things said about this movie but Jerry Goldsmiths score is another great thing about this movie.

reply

Agreed, it was a really fun and worthwhile movie. Definitely deserves a better IMDB rating.

Have you seen White Water Summer with Kevin Bacon? 80s movie that I think inspired this film a lot.

reply

No, but I'll put it on my list.

reply

Both films are similar, I recommend it. Kevin Bacon plays a semi psychotic leader of an adventure group that go white water river rafting in the sierra mountains. Bacon targets Sean Astin's character in particular, kind of a battle of wills between both of them throughout. Decent 80s film.

Just watched it on Tubi. Not seen it years but still a great little thriller.

It's a bit cheesy by today's standards (especially with the dog), but a well told story nonetheless.

I'd give it a solid 8/10.

It’s a really solid thriller, but I remember seeing it in the theatre and predicting everything, including…

[spoilers ahead]

… the dad surviving. There’s no way this movie was gonna kill the kid’s father, it’s just not that kind of nasty film, so when we’re supposed to think he’s dead I never for once believed it. I also predicted the dad would team up with the dog to save them - I was telling my friend the rest of story as the film played out.
