Do you guy's think that Tom was right for making Roarke give wade back the money or do you think Tom was being a jerk? I think Tom was just jealous that wade's present was better than his.

Wade deliberately gave him that much money to upset the dad. It was way too much to give a kid for their birthday and was totally inappropriate. Wade knew the Dad would react that way and manipulated the boy into hating him. Tom was right to make him give back the money. If someone I'd known for a day or 2 gave my kid $200 I'd tell them it wasn't right and make them give it back.
and your an idiot. there is nothing in wrong with giving someone 200 bucks for there bday i do not care how old the kid is. if someone gave my kid 200 bucks i wouldnt give a *beep*
Your an idiot for missing the point of the gesture. It was done purely to manipulate the kid. Wade knew Tom was the sort of guy that wouldn't let his son take that kind of money and make him hand it back. Wade knew Tom was uncomfortable with their presence and caused a conflict between him and Roarke making Tom out to be the bad guy.
How can you call me an idiot for interpretting the scene properly.
Yes, a gift of $200 in cash to a child from a perfect stranger is an inappropriate gift and the Dad was correct to tell the son to give it back.
I suspect Wade knew this and did it to test the family dynamics. He already knew the Dad wasn't dominant in the family since the dog didn't follow his commands.
$200 isn't even an appropriate gift to an adult from a stranger. And that is what Wade and Terry were to the family: strangers.
Not only were Wade and Terry strangers, but vicious criminals, to boot. It's agreed; $200.00 dollars in cash to a kid as a birthday present by a total stranger (and a criminal, to boot), is totally inappropriate.
I'm actually watching "The River Wild" on Cinemax right now. Normally, I would think that Wade giving money to a young kid whose family he literally just met would be very strange and inappropriate. However, at the same time, Tom did just save Wade's life in the rapids. He definitely should feel very grateful to Tom's family (although Wade's intentions may not have been for the sake of gratitude).

no it is not to much money to give to a kid his age. you know what you could get for 200 bucks now that kids his age like. not much. you could get a few xbox games. and anyways a knife is way cooler then 200 bucks. if my dad gave me a knife and some other guy gave me 200 bucks and my dad said i couldnt keep the 200 bucks i would have said ok gave the money back and went played with my knife
Well, I guess we'll have to agree to disagree, actionman. I think it's too much money to give to a kid that age. Would you give your kid 200 bucks for his birthday?

That depends if the knife cost more than $200 bucks. If it was a good knife that was worth more than $200 than yes, the knife would be better. If it was one of those cheap knives than definitely, the $200. Anyway, this was back in 1994 and $200 could get you more back then. You could probably get something like a new bicycle or a Sega Genesis or Super Nintento game system in 1994 for $200 since the xbox hadn't been invented yet.
Anyway, while $200 was a bit much for a birthday present for a 10 year old boy, if I was the dad I wouldn't make him give all of it back, I might let him keep $20.
When Roarke unwrapped the knife (it was from Maggie the dog, too), Gail remarked that the price tag was still on it and I think it read $79.95. NOW THINK! Then Wade disappeared.... to get his and Terry's gift, which was more than $79.95 . Don't you see where he was baiting the kid, knowing Tom and Gail would tell him to return it? And Gail should have spoken up too about giving it back, but she was silent I think, even though she agreed with Tom.
$200 is not a big deal... if it was from his grandma. But, from a stranger, who they just met? Who's been acting a little creepy? I would've done the same thing as Tom. Don't think it was out of jealousy. Just being a protective dad who doesn't understand his son.
And that's exactly what the film wanted to portray. He had to give it back so as to frame the scene and exaggerate how poor the relationship was between father (Tom) and son (Rourke). It was a necessary evil.
He was being a responsible parent when he didn't let Roarke accept the $200. It was a strange gift and Tom was right to be alarmed. $200 is too much to accept from a stranger if you're an ADULT let alone a CHILD. It's just something that can be held over your head.
