I can't believe you guys haven't mentioned this 90's icon: MARILYN MANSON!!!!! Marilyn was THE shock rocker of the 90's, just like Ozzy Osbourne was the shock rocker of the 80's and Alice Cooper was the shock rocker of the 70's. I would go as far as saying that Marilyn was THE most controversial music artist of the 90's. Nobody caused more controversy than he did. He was blamed for multiple bad things teenagers did.
During the late 90's, you couldn't turn the TV on or turn the radio on without hearing about him. He was everywhere: on the radio, on MTV, on the covers of magazines, even on the news. Good question. It was when I started playing video games on a regular basis, especially at the arcades. It was when I discovered alternative bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Live, Alice In Chains, Stone Temple Pilots, Gin Blossoms, Toad The Wet Sprocket, and Green Day. I was not interested in the grunge look or style, I dressed how I wanted and I would bathe regularly. I watched TGIF on ABC, I went to see movies like Jurassic Park and Waterworld on the big screen, and used a PC with Windows and surfed the Net for the first time. When this came out, I was 16 and I did like Winona Ryder, but I didn't have any interest in seeing it. The characters were in their early-mid 20s and were really nostalgic for the 70s, as I would later find out. Someone elsewhere said that the movie was already outdated by '96-'97. I'll take their word for it, as I didnt see it until almost the 2000's. Anyway, I was an 80's kid and a 90's teen. I thought that was cool, I felt I was born at just the right time to enjoy the best of both decades. This movie didnt seem to be a part of it, though. Oh well!

For me the 90s was come as you are, screw the materialism and focus on the spititial aspect of life. I went to college but not for the purpose of being a baby Boomer sellout who gave materialism a new meaning. The alternative music like grunge reflected my ideas of life. Years of my childhood seeing how government was currupt made me not give a damn. Nixon and Clinton made that fact clear.

No internet back then. You went to the library and did research for school using books and old microfilm
The "internet", which we first saw around 1993 or so, consisted of just message boards with text. No graphics
I would say you didn't really have the internet as we know it until 1996 or so
No cell phones until 1997-98 or so. We used pay phones on the street
People still watched movies on VHS tapes until DVDs started showing up in stores in the late 1990s
Yes, we had a decent economy then, but teenagers and 20 somethings then still complained and acted misunderstood, as did every generation back to the 1950s
The 90s are my favorite decade. I was in my 20s for most of it. No matter which music genre you listened to be it Rock, Alternative, Hip Hop and R&B, it was the best music ever. MTV actually played videos. MTV Jams with Bill Bellamy. Guys did not wear skinny jeans back then. Baby doll dresses and chokers were all the rage. Girls also wore baggy jeans and crop tops to show off their navel piercing. Tattoos and piercings went mainstream. So many music festivals. If you had a beeper, you thought you were so important. No cell phones. Video stores. Kevin Smith movies...(Snootchie Bootchies) 😉

I'm surprised so many didn't feel or see the impact of the rise of China (after quelling the Beijing uprising), the fall of the Soviet Bloc nations (The Berlin Wall), the successful War against Iraq (which cause a lot of angst before the invasion), the sudden explosion of the Internet and how it immediately changed the way all people interacted as opposed to just 3 - 5 years before it appeared on a mass scale (mostly dialup Internet at the time).
Btw, R.E.M. was HUGE in the early/mid 80s (at least where I grew up) and the Nineties was their second act era so to speak.
I was born in 1979 so the 90s were my teenage years. What I remember most:
THE MUSIC! AND MUSIC FESTIVALS! The Cranberries, Nirvana, No Doubt, all the cool music showing up on the WB, surprisingly a lot of strong women in music then, the fact that Lilith Fair actually existed and many people went to it

Watching the OJ Simpson chase in English class. All the black girls thought he was innocent, all the white girls thought he was a murderer
THE X-FILES! Watching this on Friday nights Freshman year of HS was the greatest
