Why do you feel the characters needed backstories? The film works perfectly without it. Or are you trying to say that it does work well? The wording of your post's title is a bit vague.
Personally I think it's great that we immediately know everything we need to know without any unneeded exposition.
I believe he’s commending the film not being critical of it.

the titles makes perfect sense. it's complimenting an element in the movie. nowhere it's suggested he's complaining

shareI agree 100% FilmBuff. The OP title says no argument can be made that the absence of character backstories works well. The double negative makes OP’s point confusing. He then gives an example of a backstory he liked with the Bruce Willis character. I don’t know what he was trying to say
