something that works well in this film

the fact that no character is ever given a backstory!

Butch's gold watch flashback had a reason to be in the plot.
take notes, contemporary cinema.

Why do you feel the characters needed backstories? The film works perfectly without it. Or are you trying to say that it does work well? The wording of your post's title is a bit vague.

Personally I think it's great that we immediately know everything we need to know without any unneeded exposition.

I believe he’s commending the film not being critical of it.

woosh

Perhaps the "woosh" applies to you? The O.P. stated one thing grammatically with his title and opening sentence, but implied the opposite in his second sentence. I pointed that out.

I remember taking this OP one way when reading it the first time and the opposite way seeing it now. You're correct, that the wording is ambiguous and his point could be taken either way.

One thing you can't argue works well - the fact that no character is ever given a backstory.

At face value, this means that you can't argue that it works well. i.e. you can't make case that this works.

Then he follows up with "take notes, contemporary cinema" seeming to indicate he meant: One thing that works well that can't be argued - the fact that no character is ever given a backstory.

the titles makes perfect sense. it's complimenting an element in the movie. nowhere it's suggested he's complaining

reply

If you believe that, then you don't understand the rules of English grammar.

reply

This is gaslighting. I need a third party to confirm I'm not crazy.

I agree 100% FilmBuff. The OP title says no argument can be made that the absence of character backstories works well. The double negative makes OP’s point confusing. He then gives an example of a backstory he liked with the Bruce Willis character. I don’t know what he was trying to say

reply

We don’t need for characters to have backstories, we just need to know who they are and QT delivered on that.

reply

No character is ever given a backstory except Butch who is one of the main characters.

One thing that works well in Basic Instinct is that there's no sex scenes except for the sex scenes that needed to be in the plot.
