Notice in the scene when Butch breaks free from the chair the Gimp tries to scream Zed for help, but Zed and the other redneck cant hear him.

Gimp is one of the most mysterious film characters in the history of films.

I think it's more likely he was just another sicko who chose to be a sex slave.

I agree that he would have been a willing participant. He appears too compliant when he is led out of the basement to be a prisoner, rather than acting like he wants to get the hell out of there. And then more or less confirms it by trying to alert the others when Butch breaks free.

Would be fascinating to know the origins of how he came to be a willing gimp that is kept in the basement though.

I’m with you on the Gimp being an actual beaten, broken slave. Something like Theon/Reek on Game of Thrones/ASOFAI, as an example.

He almost has to be a prisoner against his will, that has simply been broken. He was in the box, but they had no idea that today was going to be filled with special visitors. That's not a part time gig.
