Fabienne?

Butch's girlfriend was absolutely annoying. Can someone please explain why? I always feel it is necessary to skip their scenes.

reply

Explain why she was annoying? Some people don't like her accent or just her pouting character.

Seize the moment, 'cause tomorrow you might be dead.

reply

I'd say not so much annoying but unnecessary. As has already been stated, it would've been possible to omit her character entirely. It wouldn't have made any difference to the plot. Butch forgets the watch himself and has to go pick it up. The story would've played-out pretty much the same way. Because her character is unnecessary, the scene at the motel feels dragged out. I personally felt she was rather annoying because she isn't really my type. Her constant pouting and mannerisms were off putting rather than cute.

Butch forgets the watch himself and has to go pick it up.

It might've been hard to buy that Butch forgets the watch himself given how important it clearly was to him.

reply

I always found it odd that Butch left the watch in the hands of his ditzy girlfriend. Him forgetting it himself would make it less believable but his girlfriend really strikes me as someone who can't be given too much responsibility. I never understood why he didn't just pack the watch in with the change of clothes he had.

reply

She should have been flagellated.

reply

Heroin overdose. No question.

reply

Haha I think so too! In some ways I feel like she was so over-the-top annoying on purpose.. but yes I skip through the "pancake" scene everytime.

reply

she's kind of a typical, everyday girlfriend. Annoying? Maybe just a little.... but lovable because she loves you and will do stuff with you...I mean like travel and recreation and eat blueberry pancakes.
She is like the gf a lot of guys like. Not all..I'm a strong independent woman...like she thinks she's a bad ass chick. Now those types are annoying.

There is always a purpose to what Quentin Tarantino does in a film.

Fabienne was a representation of Buch’s struggle. His love is divided between her and his father (as symbolized by the watch). Being unwilling to move on from the past almost costed him his relationship and his life.

reply

Yes, and often that purpose is Tarantino indulging what he thinks is his genius. The guy can’t edit himself. I like him, but he has his flaws.

She is incredibly annoying, and I also skip these scenes. The first time I watched this movie, I was completely zoning out until Butch says the line "Where's my watch?" Ohhh man my stomach just dropped at that moment, just as I'm sure it did for everybody. No need for him to even ask, we all know she forgot the only thing in the world that he would risk his life to go back for. She herself could have been trapped in that apartment with Vincent and Marcelleus, and he would not have gone back for her, but for the watch he would.

And I think that's what Tarrantino wanted. He wanted those scenes to be too long, and boring, just so he could set up that shocking moment where we know she forgot the watch. Had they cut 90% of those scenes, it wouldn't have had the same effect, because Cpt. Coon would still been fresh in our minds.

reply

Good points.

Butch should have packed up the watch himself. But then we wouldn't have had the adventure of him getting it back.

reply

I can explain it. You're very easily annoyed.
