My God -- This movie is a masterpiece.

Before you suspect sarcasm, I'm being dead serious: This movie was simply astounding! It was beautiful, extremely haunting, the music was unbelievable, the acting wasn't close to being perfect but it was great nonetheless, the script was fantastic. Everything in this movie was great to me. I don't understand the hate. Seriously, I was expecting to come on here and see this on the Top 250 -- no joke. It's that good. This could very well be high on a short list of "Most Underrated Movies Ever". That's the only word that comes to mind here: Underrated. It is extremely under-appreciated and completely forgotten, and it shocks the hell out of me.

To me the big flaw of the movie is the acting. I love the 18th century look and setting, the musical score, it's faithfulness to the book without being dull...but some the acting just makes me cringe. That and the fact that it seemed like he slapped "the bride" together awfully fast.

Overall I think it's a good and entertaining movie.

Just enjoy the *beep* movie!

Yes. But, that's also logical because nobody wants/likes tha kind of movie.
It is mostly misunderstood. This is theater, and opera-like - greater-than-life Shakesperian/Brannaghian version with vast scenes, and over the top everything. As it should be. Not some grim low-key, serious CSI-with-explanations-who did what and why splundge!

This is a great film, and I just saw it again recently. It is over the top and operatic, as some have mentioned, and as it should be, given the romantic era in which the novel was written.
Laughter at this movie, as some earlier poster mentioned, is mostly a sign of immaturity. People who fear to let themselves go and to immerse themselves in the storyline find themselves suddenly assaulted with grand images; they become embarrassed--someone might think they are "not cool." So they laugh.
That's why this is one of those movies that really can't be watched in a theater, sadly.

Highly underrated IMO. A bit over the top here and there but I love the sets and the camera movements. For a 20 year old movie, definitely aged well.

Agreed. 10/10

Ratings are underrated. Stories like "Frankenstein" are an acquired taste for many and this is a love or hate it story.

Yes, I said the same thing when I saw it. his performance in this film wasn't the most memorable but hey, I'm from New York and there are a lot of monsters here I can assure you! lol.

As for Karloff and the James Whale films. Even though they leaned away from the source material, I thought that those films were true masterpieces in comparison to this one. It's strange because Frankenstein is my favorite novel of all time, and yet, the proper movie adaptation is my least favorite of the films.

It's not even a proper adaptation, I'm pretty sure if Mary Shelley were alive she would want her name taken off this.
