Why didn’t Forrest get drafted by the NFL?

I was just wondering this. i would've liked to have seen a scene where an NFL scout tries to recruit him, but he misunderstands the situation and instead joins the army because they recruited him first.

Late to the party. My take on this question is this... from all the football we see in the movie, it appears he is only returning kickoffs. I'm just guessing that a kickoff returner only wouldn't have been a high priority back then. The time period setting is before my time, but I don't think straight speed was a huge selling/drafting point at that time. I know the Cowboys had Bullet Hayes in the 60s who had won Olympic gold medals, but other than that, I don't recall any talk of speedster studs from back then. Renaldo Nehemiah in the 80's was a former track stud, and he had a few TDs in the pros helped by his speed, but he is hardly remembered.
