Who could have played a better Gump?

Alec Baldwin.
Bruce Willis.
Bill Murray.

It's always been rumored that Bill Murray was "considered" for the role, though he says he was never offered it, nor did he ever have any serious conversations with the producers or director about it. I think I could see him playing the role, but nowhere near as well as Hanks. Maybe that's just because of how good he was in What About Bob?.

Baldwin couldn't pull off the warmth, kindness, and innocence of Forrest.

Willis would have been and absolute disaster.

Dustin Hoffman!

But the problem with this movie is they needed a teenage Gump. Hanks is way too old in those scenes of him running from the dudes in the truck.

Still one of my favorite movies but it's hard to watch older people playing teenagers.

Plus, Hoffman would have probably turned this role down because he wouldn't have wanted to get type-casted as a person with mental disabilities. He was great in Rain Man though. If you like FG but haven't seen RM, I would highly recommend it.

Rain Man puts Forrest Gump to shame.

reply

Apples to oranges I suppose. I like both movies for different reasons. Now, have you seen The Curious Case of Benjamin Button?

It's also very similar to FG but I think it's probably better than FG and RM.

TCCOBB raises so many philosophical questions about life, whereas FG and RM were more about simply entertaining the audience. I really liked it a lot, it's deeper than what people give it credit for.

Adam Sandler would've been an ideal fit for the role of Gump. By choosing Sandler, Zemickis would've casted a real-life retard to play such a character, whereas Hanks was just pretending

reply

Ouch! that hurts if you're Adam Sandler or one of his fans. Personally, I think Sandler is a little too sappy to play Gump.

And I don't think he would have any chemistry with Robin Wright. They would've had to change the female lead for sure. Drew Barrymore maybe... lol...

reply

Yes, I've seen that as it was very good as well. But Rain Man to me is one of the best!! 👍👍👍👍

This is the problem, don't you think? he already played mental disable guy. We don't want another version of Rain Man. The character is too much tied up with Hoffman, we wouldn't be able to separate Rain Man from Forrest Gump, they do the right thing to hire someone else to play the part.

What do you think about Edward Norton as Forrest?

reply

Too young, he wasn't known yet then. I believe Primal Fear in 96 was what put Norton on the map. And what a phenomenal start. But if FG had come out after that, then I agree, he would have been good.

Johnny Depp

Billy Bob Thornton playing Karl Childers playing Forrest Gimp. That would rock.

Nobody would have played it better than Tom Hanks. However, if Hanks wasn't cast as Gump, the only two other actors that I could see remotely pulling it off would either be Mel Gibson or (bear with me on this one since he stinks to high Heaven now) possibly Nic Cage. Cage was riding a big time high in the 90's.

That being said, neither Mel Gibson or Nic Cage would be even close to as good as Hanks' portrayal, but I do think both of them would have done an at least acceptable job. Tom Hanks as Gump is one of those absolutely perfecting castings in movie history.

I believe Nicolas Cage could have good job (not better job) as Gump. His role in Adaption make me believe he can do this role.
