The first time I watched the movie I almost failed to realize it was a period piece because one of the scenes looked like it could have been filmed in any era and still look like LA. So really didn't even notice the soundtrack that time. Noticed the songs I knew but hear them so often that I don't really associate a specific time with them.
Another you might wanna check out is Jackie Brown. Being Taratino's Pulp Fiction follow-up project probably made a lot of people tune out the soundtrack a little because expectations were too high. I think doing that though probably makes viewers miss out on stuff. It's no wonder sequels never do well.
As for the songs in Wonderland, I've noticed a lot of times in movies that they pick stuff far different from what you find on radio stations. I'm wondering if that's because it's cheaper, or if maybe the director is using their music knowledge to expand people's catalogue a little. I also think using tracks that haven't been worn to death probably makes a scene a little more interesting because the entire experience is new to the viewer.
