Not Nearly As Bad As People Say

I remember the big firestorm of negativity when this movie first came out. I don't get it. This movie is easily more entertaining than at least 70% of the movies put out by Hollywood in the last 12 months. It was cute with an edge. If anything, it was more honest about sexuality and lack of morals than most films.

Sure it had the required cornball Hollywood ending with Rosie getting the guy, but overall was amusing.

As a pre-teen I saw (never watched, just quick glimpses) this movie on every once and a while and it always struck me as odd. At that time s/m was something I knew viscerally, but not practically so I was always intrigued by it. I knew Rosie through things like A League of Their Own, Now and Then and various tv gigs, so to have her dressed up in s/m garb always sat weird and curious to me. I heard the many bad reviews it got throughout my years and coupled with my interest in quality/serious films, specially that of a sexual/s&m nature, I stayed away from it.

With that being said, I watched it last night and I felt it wasnt nearly as bad as was built up. Its not good, nor bad. I havent read the book and I knew it wasnt what I wanted it to be, so I just watched for what it was. One of the better parts of the Rosie plot was the end were Dan brings home a vibrator to his wife. The other part had it's moments that peaked my interest, but I of course, wanted more... as I usually do. I did, however, enjoy that s/m was a central plot in a mainstream movie, no matter if it could have been done better. At least they weren't murdering rapists.

In a nutshell, it was actually better than I had expected. I gave it a 5.

i liked it too - sometimes you need a feel good movie lol strange to say that about a movie set at a BDSM resort but i miss these types of movies that were popular in the 80s and 90s.
