People really like this film?
It seems like an average movie with a few great scenes here and there. The problem is that absolutely nothing seems to be happening... I was bored to tears when I was watching this movie!

shareit's definitely not for everyone. i can see why people would call it boring. i love it because of it's imagery. it feels poetic.

The thing with this film is that the style is insanely great...
The plot is kinda similar to Woody Allen and Sofia Copola's films nothing extrordinary but still good...

If you're bored to tears maybe you should go on a run
shareA lot of people can't get past films with no plot, it's one of the main failings of this current generation of filmgoers. Too much focus on surface meanings and plots rather than the thematic depth, visual motifs, storytelling told through acting and silence and other subtleties. That's why wong kar wai is so beloved, because there are a large group of people who DON'T get this, and therefore don't like his films...so instead of adhering to these norms (aka you people) he just goes all out on the type of films he wants.
Reason why people love this film so much is because of all the elements i mentioned above. The visuals are excellent, the cinematography, the vibrant colours, the lively settings, the melding of cultures with it's music, language and melting pot atmosphere sets the perfect backdrop to tell a scattered love story rather than the usual two people meet by coincidence and they fall in love, it just gives the feeling of two random souls who take a liking to but their bonds are fickle just like they are with everyone else...it brings a real maturity to the tale, and once you feel the film is mature with it's content it allows you to really care and be involved in these people's lives.
Eventually films like this (ahead of their time) will appear more and more in cinema, because plots nowadays are so predictable, everyone can see whats coming, and instead of making convuluted plots people are just delving into what everyone relates with, characters, acting and emotion. That's what puts this film miles ahead of mere plot.
No but go ahead, dismiss everyone else that understands this but you...clearly you are the only one that gets it, everyone else must be just blind sheep right?
Yes. A beautiful meditation on loneliness and passion, on time and space, on the moment and eternity.
We could have high times if you'll abide
I liked the movie a lot, but I'll admit the second part affected me a lot more than the first. I almost didn't make it through because I think 1.5 hours of the first story would have been too much. The switch to a second story was very interesting and I regained my interest.
shareI love Chungking Express! Sure, it isn't exactly along the lines of Love, Actually (thankfully) but it is a movie to be experienced. It's perceptions of Hong Kong is innovative (thankfully no White Westerner in a leading role with a Suzie Wong-type hanging on to his every word).
