Real people are not the perfect stereotypes we see in most movies. What makes Untamed Heart shine is that its cast of characters are all on the weird side. They're regular people working at a small diner, living humdrum lives. Yes, Marisa Tomei is very beautiful, but what sets her apart is her big heart, which partly explains how she could fall in love with Slater's character. He may have greasy hair, but he's also kind, smart, and just as attractive as she is.
I too first saw this film in my early teens and I think it holds up remarkably well today. I still love to see movies where people who are different from the thoughtless, mean-spirited masses find love. It is realistic because it is common. Movies and television seem to have convinced the majority of the last two generations that different equals bad, but it doesn't.
The OP calls Slater's character is a freak, which, while not a crime, does reveal her shallowness and snobbery. Freaks are simply people who have problems that are apparent to others. Many beloved stories feature protagonists who have serious problems, and that's why we root for them. They're underdogs. Their problems have made their lives more challenging, which in turn has made them humble. I'd say most people are in need of a little humbling. Don't you, Annette?
