Loved when I was a kid..17 years later its dumb!

I used to love this movie cause I loved Christian Slater...looking back I realized that there is no way a hot little waitress would ever get together with a greasy, long haired, weirdo busboy with a baboon heart...Its just silly...he was a freak and there is no way this story could be believable!!

Well he did save her from being raped. Plus it seemed Caroline was always getting dumped.

"No! That’s not true at all. Elvis takes fifty percent of everything I earn." Col. Parker

I always loved Christian Slater but it creeped me out how he sort of stalked her too, I mean he did save her at least but yeah his character bugs me now that I watch it.

Buster:I don’t want no part of your tight-ass country-club, you freak bitch!

reply

I understand how Adam's behavior would be seen as stalking, but unfortunately, he did not know how to just approach a girl and talk to her because of his upbringing and spending so much time alone. I gathered that was what the filmmakers were trying to convey.

sure...but just because you have a baboon heart...screwing baboons at the zoo doesn't really count as 'getting laid'

someone's grown cynical in their old age...

I love this movie its been a long minute since I watched this movie. I was about 11 when it came out in 1993 and about 13/14 when I first watched it on Showtime. Its a sweet romantic movie. I almost brought it the other month when I saw it at FYE used for about 8 bucks.

I understand in a way what the OP means. I'm watching it now, I first saw it when it came out (I was 18 then). I thought it was tolerably sweet then (Christian Slater was all the rage from "Heathers" to this film)
but its kind of blah now. I find it annoying that there is a huge continuity error halfway through the film: His scar disappears!

Marisa Tomei's character Carolyn is so dippy, and her friend is even more annoying. The way she reacts to Carolyn telling her she was almost raped was terrible acting.

But I will admit I cry every time at that ending.

"I'd say this cloud is Cumulo Nimbus."
"Didn't he discover America?"
"Penfold, shush."

Real people are not the perfect stereotypes we see in most movies. What makes Untamed Heart shine is that its cast of characters are all on the weird side. They're regular people working at a small diner, living humdrum lives. Yes, Marisa Tomei is very beautiful, but what sets her apart is her big heart, which partly explains how she could fall in love with Slater's character. He may have greasy hair, but he's also kind, smart, and just as attractive as she is.

I too first saw this film in my early teens and I think it holds up remarkably well today. I still love to see movies where people who are different from the thoughtless, mean-spirited masses find love. It is realistic because it is common. Movies and television seem to have convinced the majority of the last two generations that different equals bad, but it doesn't.

The OP calls Slater's character is a freak, which, while not a crime, does reveal her shallowness and snobbery. Freaks are simply people who have problems that are apparent to others. Many beloved stories feature protagonists who have serious problems, and that's why we root for them. They're underdogs. Their problems have made their lives more challenging, which in turn has made them humble. I'd say most people are in need of a little humbling. Don't you, Annette?

reply

Was it even meant to be believable? I think not.

This is a worthwhile watch (maybe even good movie) if you don't bring realism into the picture. Ha.

Hey there, Johnny Boy, I hope you fry!

I have to see more things by Tony Bill, but there is a fact that I find fascinating: this one and "My Bodyguard" have all that I see wrong with toxic masculinity, with patriarchy the second and with white knights this one, and even though they work. It's like they really believe in that ingenious vision of what a MAN has to do.
