True story???

I've heard that John Guare based his play on a true story. Does anyone have any details about the actual incident?

I recall seeing David Hampton on a tv talk show years ago, can't remember
which one. He was the inspiration for the Paul character. He claimed to
have duped wealthy New Yorkers into believing that he was the son of
actor-director Sidney Poitier. In reality Sidney Poitier has six daughters
and no son. Mr. Hampton told one of his con man stories that went like
this: he called a popular New York nightclub and stated that the sons
of Sidney Poitier and Gregory Peck were about to arrive at the nightspot.
He was joined by a friend of his and they showed up at the place and told
the doorman that they were the two people who'd just announced over the
phone that they were going to enter the club. They were not asked for any
type of identification and the staff and management were convinced that
David Hampton and his friend were whom they claimed to be. They pulled
this type of scam many times in order to frequent popular bars, nightclubs
and restaurants in the New York City area. And often they were given
complimentary food and drinks. Mr. Hampton also stated in the tv interview
that he was gay and unemployed and that he was just so sick and tired of
wealthy white people having all of the privileges of society. And he also
claimed that he had no interest to find gainful employment of any kind
due to white society reaping all of the rewards of life and that he was
very good at his own con game! I hope this helps explain about the person
who was the basis and inspiration for the movie version of Six Degrees Of
Separation.

Very interesting post to say the least. I live in
Florida and whenever I drive to work if I go a
certain route then I pass by the local "tent city"
where the homeless and bums congregate. The good
majority of these people are white men and some
women and it always amazes me whenever I've been
approached by these guys asking me for a cash
handout and one will tell me that he's a veteran
who's down on his luck. Well I tell them that I'm a
vet as well and I work for a living and pay rent.
What I don't tell them is that I own my Jeep Wrangler
and a motorcycle as well and I don't need to beg
borrow or steal. I work one job full time and
graduated from school years ago. I served in our
armed services under the first President Bush during
the first Gulf War. If these people are really
vets as they claim then they would know that there
are services provided for veterans at the federal
and state levels. Oh and whenever I stop to buy
gas there's occasionally a black man panhandling
at the gas station and what's he's doing is just
adding to the stereotype of homeless/bum people who
are too damn lazy to find work and the other
stereotype of black men of any age who'd rather
beg and panhandle instead of finding a "real paying
job" of some sort! I do not pity these folk whether
they are white, black or any race/color. Have you
ever noticed that we never see homeless asian people?!

Wow no homeless Asians..man you are on to something!

I have never thought of that but you are right. I guess it is work ethic. The reason I think these tent cities and the like exist is that there is an aspect of our Western society that permits an environment for them to exist. Social services that are safety measures for persons that have become work challenged have become a life support system for the dregs. They live like parasites feeding off the host organism.
Asians maybe know the reality of starvation.

And another very interesting and right on to the point

of our world overall. Keep up the posts!

"primarily homosexual males in civilized nations"? Where are you getting that? Heterosexual intercourse is the primary mode of HIV infection worldwide.*
Africa also remains the most infected part of the world, and considering it's by and large illegal there with heavy penalties, I think you need to rethink your own bigotry.
